I think the whole unit needs to be removed to get access to them, possibly the battery as well!! I know it sounds drastic but I'm sure there is no easier way. Good luck!:thumb:

cheers for that mate,to remove the unit do i have to remove the trim next to the light and the grill

No, as far as I remember it is just three bolts. Two on top and one on the side by the grill. I think they are 10mm but just try a spanner. You can get access by removing the battery and air box, but I think its easier taking the headlight out. Removing the unit is Subaru's advice when contacted. Shouldn't take too long now;)

thanks mate, ive tried doing it by removing the airbox but its immposable theres no way of getting to the sidelight

also to the right of the light unit there is a small piece of trim..i take it this needs to be removed to access the bolt near the grill

I found it easiest to just take the whole headlight unit out.

1) Remove the air intake: undo the two bolts where it is held onto the front bulkhead, then lift it up and out. Obviously this is only necessary for the driver's side.

2) Remove the grille: there are two clips at the bottom (use a long flat screwdriver) and four at the top. The clips are fragile!

3) Remove the side inserts by releasing the three clips on each: two on the top and one on the inside edge. The plastic insert then slides forwards.

4) Remove the headlight unit: there are three bolts (one on the top and two on the inside flange behind where the inserts were), plus a stiff push-in pin hidden behind the outer edge. Once the three bolts are out you will need to pull the whole unit forward strongly but slowly. Keep it straight. Make sure you have one hand on the outside edge of the unit. The pin can be VERY stiff, as it tends to corrode.

Whole process takes about five to ten minutes with practice.
