what the hell is dual core in 1 sentence or maybe 1 paragraph

How about 3 words:

What is the difference ?

Core2Dual is Intel's branding for 2 cores in one processor. Dual Core is normally found with AMD processors with 2 cores in one processor.

Pentium D=2 cores 1 processor
Core Duo = 2 cores 1 processor
Core2 Duo = 2 cores 1 processor
Core2 Quad = 4 cores 1 processor

They are all basically the same thing, but different generations.

It starts getting complicated when you need to explain 65nm v 90nm (intel v amd) or the reason that amd's have a 2000mhz fsb to intels 1333fsb (its just exactly the same except that amd count front and both sides on their fsb and intel count front and 1 side) :)

All you need to know is that at the moment Intel Core 2 processors are faster, cheaper & more energy efficient than the competition and are capable of silly overclocks :)

Yes, if you like ultra quiet/silent computing. Less heat means less airflow > lower noise :)

AMD don`t have a front side bus, they use The hypertransport Link to connect to the Northbridge. Which is only used to pass data to any thing but memory.

um AMD's do have a FSB mate, think you're getting confused with the old P4HT's possibly?

Core2Duo - latest Intel micro-architecture with 2 processor cores on one die (i.e. one chip in a single socket) sharing a single level 2 cache. (Intel's Quad-Core processors are 2 Core2Duos on the same die i.e. 2 seperate processors. Well, a bit more than that but you get the idea ...)

Dual core - generic description of 2 cores on a single die BUT in Intel's case usually to denote that the processors are older technology and thus seperate.

Nope they have a mempory controller on board which connects directly to the memory. And the Hypertransport Link connects to the northbridge. No FSB at all.

Current AMDs yes not the older generation :)

On all other processors – including AMD processors not based on AMD64 architecture, like the original Athlon, Athlon XP and Sempron socket 462 processors – the CPU has only one external bus, also known as front side bus (FSB).

Good read ;) just ashame that their new super chips aint as good as the core 2 duo's :eek: still lagging behind, and intel have their new 45nm chips out now.... ooooops.
