BBC NEWS | Business | Tata Motors unveils cheapest car

Cheap as chips, probably better styled than the 08 imreza :lol1:

Odds on 10 January 2008 09:00 AM

Not after you've had lunch no :D

RAJ27 10 January 2008 09:24 AM

Don't knock it, rear engined potential beast. Slap a turbo in and you might have a Charade GTI special.:)

Tata Motors People's Car

Wonder if Litchfield could get them in for us?

kilo_4que 10 January 2008 09:31 AM

:lol1: looks hilarious

The 'one lakh' car becomes a reality. TATA really are a car company on the up. Next stop Jaguar.

It's an interesting counterpoint to the failure of Fuji Heavy Industries car division.

Leaps and bounds - ffs, somebody with an original idea has designed it

hutton_d 10 January 2008 01:03 PM

By the time it gets to the UK it'll be £10K rather than £1200 ......

Dave

NACRO 10 January 2008 01:09 PM

More like 4 grand but the point stands. I would imagine emission regs in europe would also be a problem.

TonyG 10 January 2008 01:30 PM

That's not a car, it's a Red Nose advert for Comic Relief...

NACRO 10 January 2008 01:45 PM

I do wonder sometimes about people on here and their ability to reason.

It's a revolutionary car in many ways. I imagine people poked fun at the original mini when they first saw it........

davegtt 10 January 2008 02:17 PM

Think its a brilliant car for the money if you think about it. £1200 wont buy you much in the way of a decent car with reliability at the minute over here will it.

As said though I cant see it being less than £2-3k over here.

Shark Man 10 January 2008 10:25 PM

Look forward to the Ncap videos :smug:

Still....I think a Turbo'd Hyabusa engine swap might spice things up ;)

hail-hail 11 January 2008 10:46 AM

My mate was headhunted by TATA a few years back, he was the QA manager for the Aston Vanquish. Haven't spoken to him for a while, but TATA will be moving into Europe with their cheap cars.

kilo_4que 11 January 2008 11:09 AM

Well they have already moved into Europe with their 4x4s

You mean cheap cars like Jaguars and Land Rovers?

Have they even taken over Jaguar and Land Rover?

NACRO 11 January 2008 11:21 AM

They are the only serious player in the frame.

kilo_4que 11 January 2008 11:27 AM

I knew about Jaguar, didnt know they were serious in buying out Land Rover.

But in all honesty I think Jaguar will be worse off at TATA. Nothing against TATA as they are a very large car maker. The problem is since take over from FORD Jaguar has lost the real "expensive" feel. My point is that if one of the worlds largest car makers struggled to convince people that Jaguar is still Jaguar, how on earth will TATA convince people unless they aim to market it in India.

dpb 11 January 2008 11:38 AM

Maybe ten years time theyll be more wealthy indians than brits

kilo_4que 11 January 2008 11:41 AM

but you see the problem in india is. The wealthier are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The number of wealthy people wont increase much but the already wealthy will be verrrry wealthy by ten years. Maybe even have our next richest man from there lol

NACRO 11 January 2008 11:50 AM

Some of the wealthiest people I know are from India or living and working there. TATA is just one of the agressive, succesful companies that are becoming players in western economies.
It won't be long until they are outsourcing their call centres to the UK.

I wont go as far as saying they would outsource their call centres to the UK. Being wealthy does not mean excessive spending. Uk companies are going to india to cut costs and your telling me an Indian who already has the option of saving money will increase their overheads for no real reason.
