200+ BHP required

I have a sport running 160 bhp standard, bar the sti backbox. I want to get it to 200 what else can I do.

Cheers

buy a turbo model

myblackwrx 09 January 2008 03:23 PM

Apart from JGMs answer:) it may be worth having a look on .:ImprezaSport.net:.

Jolly Green Monster 09 January 2008 03:25 PM

its just not worth the expence on the mods and insurance hike.. far cheaper to just buy the turbo, imho.

I will be as soon as I find one that I like. I use the sport for everyday driving and for the fact that they are not that common. Nearly every scoob you see looks like the next one that passes. I would like to be individual and stand out.

exhaust change would get you a few more bhp Borla from the USA do some options but they aren't cheap.

You will stand out, you'll be the slow one! :D (Just kidding. :thumb: )
If subaru realised that a turbo was needed to get over 200bhp (cheaply), it gives you a clue as to the amount of money needed to bring a normally aspirated engine up to that spec.

Dream Weaver 09 January 2008 04:07 PM

I don't really know about boxer engines, but to get the Mi16 engine in my 205 from 160 to 200BHP I had to rebuild the engine, add cams, ported head, throttle bodies and ECU and that cost well over £3k to do.

Would cost similar on a Sport, so better to just buy a turbo.

£75 per BHP? Ouch!

Ok so I don't have a turbo and the car may be slow, but when you are doing about 500 miles per week would you run a turbo? I am on the look out for a decent leggy or clasic that I will use at the weekends or for AS club drives ect. The sport just runs me around.

stotty1 09 January 2008 05:07 PM

To be honest mate i do 750 miles a week in my sti 8 and its great. i am sure there are other people on here who do more miles than me per week and use their turbo as a everyday car . I really wouldnt bother modding your sport just too much money involved.

If that is the case mate, I wouldn't even bother trying to eek more power out of the sport. As has been said; you'll be paying approx 3k for the sort of power your after, for probably not really THAT much real world gains, and you'll never get that 3k back on resale value when the time comes. The car is essentially a daily run about/commuter as you say, so leave it as it is and buy a turbo!! :)

Dspeed 09 January 2008 05:58 PM

Classic wise if your running 160bhp from a sport than that is fantastic and Im not sure how. What year car exactly? The reason a sport dosnt make as much power as other 2ltrs is the fact that it is the equivilant of a sigle cam unit and not a twin. I have heard of some usa based engines in newer models that our quad cams but not many.

Dspeed 09 January 2008 06:02 PM

You could buy a blown turbo engine, remove the turbo, rebuild and raise the compression ratio and rebuild it using the na systems.

Brun 09 January 2008 06:56 PM

If you are doing 500 miles a week, why would you want to get more power from it? Sell it and buy a TDi which will be quicker and way more easy on the fuel than your Sport for the weekly slog and get a Turbo for the weekend.

Is that a serious question?

fraser87uk 10 January 2008 02:48 PM

anyone that charges 2k you cannot trust.

harvey 10 January 2008 03:08 PM

Getting 200 bhp out of a Sport is a tall order and will be expensive. It also defeats the reasons for running a Sport in the first place.
There are a number of things the Sport will respond well to but again it depends on how much you are prepared to spend.
1) Custom non restrictive exhaust
2) Port the exhaust manifolds
3) Then it is time to look at the fuel pressure regulator
4) If you are prepared to remove the engine, skim the heads to increase compression ratio
5) Port the heads
6) Lighten the flywheel
7) lightwight pulleys.
Up to this point you will have added a bit of power, nowhere near 200bhp but you will have loads more torque and the car will drive nicely and be more responsive. Driven sensibly it will probably use less fuel too.

Cheers Harvey,

I've managed 164 from 125 with the addition of an sti backbox and a good service. So only need 40 bhp.

trading it in as I have found a bug eye turbo for a song.

k_duraman 10 January 2008 10:44 PM

i will be doing a 2.0l swap on my 1.6 turbo soon. would you be interested in the turbo kit? i know you said no turbos but this is a rather small garret unit, will give an extra 50 hp without using too much fuel. i will let it go for 1000 pounds. it includes:

turbo
intercooler (front mount)
ecu
all pluming
dump valve
hks super flow air filter

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g3...y/CIMG0594.jpg

but you have to wait until i do the transplant
