ECU Remap - 1998

Further to an earlier post i made regarding sports catting my 98 Terzo, does anybody know if my current is ECU is remappable or would remapping this model require a new ECU to be purchased?

Cheers in anticipation :notworthy

lightwave693 06 January 2008 08:09 PM

i have a my98 uk turbo wagon and the ecu on mine isnt mappable, you need to speak to jolly green monster on here or AndyF they know their ecus very well.

oki doki, cheers Rich :thumb:

Jolly Green Monster 06 January 2008 10:01 PM

As Rich said you need an aftermarket ecu to map the 98.. at the moment..

is someone soon going to crack the 98 ecu as they can rework ones before and after

got a spare ecu can it be doctored for a motherboard like the 4 pluggers

Jolly Green Monster 06 January 2008 10:08 PM

ESL are working on the 97/98 yes.

Simon :)

Neil XR 06 January 2008 10:10 PM

looking at the power figures they are giving it looks like all they are doing is fitting some kind of FCD and uping the boost, i may be wrong but thats all SUPERCHIPS do for this model and they claim the same figures.

not a smart thing to do in my opinion!

Simon is right, price will be as per 92-6, we have pre-production boards about to go into manufacture, the test process is likely to be in the region of 6 months, so they should be available this summer.

Cheers

Just had a phone call from a bloke from that link earlier in this thread, BC Tuning after emailing him. He said 98 models can be remapped. He asked if i had a obd2 port under steering wheel (which i have a port under steering wheel), and said he 'Live Maps' it, tailoring original ecu's parameters ie ignition advance, fuelling, boost etc. Said it gives +37 bhp and +80 torque, all for £345 inc vat (can even travel free of charge)! Sounds good to me, but i am wary.......the daddys on here ie Jolly Green, Andy Forrest, Scoobyclinic all say Apexi Power Fc, and probably for a reason!!!! So, what do we think about this blokes idea of remapping original ecu........??????

jayallen 07 January 2008 08:52 PM

Ive also spoken to him about mapping my car. Price wise he said he would come to me and map mine and a mates car for £500 using software that he's developed so theres no licence.

Jolly Green Monster 08 January 2008 12:32 AM

the 98 doesn't have an OBD2 socket.. its not OBD "2"

Simon

martin850 08 January 2008 06:06 PM

What is an OBD2 socket?

There's no flash memory on the motherboard so it can't be done in software. If he has to ask if it has an OBD port then that should tell you all you need to know.

If you were to take him up on his kind offer, then be sure to never let the car out of your site...a chap on the Forester forum had a s-turbo 'chipped' by Van Aaken (99My so it is mappable) and that was just a bleed and an FCD.

Its hard to believe but there are even bigger cowboys out there, someone called superchipit was going round car supermarkets fitting a £0.50 zener diode to the map sensor and then putting a knife halfway through the boost control pipework. He charged £300 for this.
This just caused massive overboost which was not seen by the ECU, initially the cars feel quicker midrange but as you can imagine they have a limited life
The first one I came across I thought it was just a damaged pipe, 2nd one had thrown a rod out the block and had the same cut in the boost control pipe, this was on a 3 month old 2.5 WRX !

Subaru did not cover it on warranty as they were able to ascertain from the engineers report that the damage was not caused by normal settings or use.

1998 and OBD :D:D:D:D:D
Just do a search on OBD and it's Spec...I think you'll find it wasn't around in 1998.
As mentioned above there isn't anything in a 1998 ECU that can be re-programmed from a laptop. The only way to change how it runs is to fit an adaptor board inside, which requires desoldering of IDC type headers and fitting.
I don't think anyone in the UK fits such adaptors (PE have probably stopped).
But this may change Mid98' eh! Andy ;)

He will probably (also as mentioned above) just fit a crude mechanical valve and a fuel cut bypass.

Scott.T 09 January 2008 09:26 PM

Here you go :
1996: The OBD-II specification is made mandatory for all cars sold in the United States Subaru Turbo/WRX/STi not sold in the USA

2001: The European Union makes EOBD [1], a variant of OBD-II, mandatory for all petrol vehicles sold in the European Union, starting in MY2001 (see European emission standards Directive 98/69/EC [2] ).

The 1999/2000 Impreza has the OBD port but I am lead to believe, and the fact that the OBD S/W I have doesn't work, that it isn't fully compliant.
It wasn't fully compliant until the bugeye in 2001.

Mocom Racing 10 January 2008 07:18 AM

99/00 is OBDII, pre this is just OBD.

The rookie 10 January 2008 12:14 PM

Is it heck.....
01MY on is EOBD (for EU cars), 99MY on have the OBD style socket but it doesn't use OBD protocol, but SSM which is incompatable with OBD scan tools....

agree

martin850 10 January 2008 05:27 PM

Would it be possible for a 1998 Scooby to have the ECU from 1997 due to it being built in 97 and registered in 98?

Andy.F 10 January 2008 05:55 PM

Yes.... but 97 and 98 are the same type !

martin850 10 January 2008 06:02 PM

OK thanks. Roll on the ESL chip.

Bastek333 05 May 2008 08:37 PM

Any news about MY98 remap possibillities ??

Jolly Green Monster 05 May 2008 09:25 PM

still usual suspects (Apexi, SimTek, Link etc) ESL board still in the pipeline I believe
