Wireless on laptop died
 

My wireless networking has stopped working!! It appears to be the laptop, as when i took it to work it could not find the one at work. Can I replace it witha USB or a PCMCIA card one? if so how do you sissable the inbuilt on? XP picks it up every time I reboot the PC.

Start - RUN - type "services.msc" (without quotes) - Look down the service list for "WIRELESS ZERO CONFIGURATION" - double click it - click STOP then startup type to DISABLE

This will turn off windows management of the Wireless adapter and now allow you to use a 3'rd party USB/PCMCIA adapter

just plugged a new pcmcia one in and it was sorted :D

Sure you havn't flipped a switch on the side? Dell laptops (If that's what you've got) have a small slide switch for switching them on and off. Also check the BIOS to make sure that hasn't reset to defaults and disabled the on-board Wireless card.

Was just gonna post that, my fujistu has a slide switch and its caught me out a few times when its moved by accident.

Sorted its got a switch next to the on off switch!! LOL

Your welcome. At least you don't have to fork out on another wireless adpter now.

One of the most important switches on a laptop imo. Wireless networks are often not secure. Its really nice to know that when you are in a strange place nobody can hack into your machine as its wireless capabilities are off :thumb:

1. Increase battery life, the radio in your laptop needs a fair bit of power. Why have it on if not using wifi?

2. Aircraft safety. Most airlines require this off when in flight, although thats questionable now since at least two airlines now offer inflight wifi, Jetblue and Lufthansa
