Overheating problem

My type R picked a great time to let me down yestersay...on the way to a wedding!

I popped the bonnet and saw that the bottom rad hose had just slipped off the radiator. It hadn't burst or split, just slipped off. So I limped to a nearby friends house and parked it there over night.

I went back to the car this morning and filled it up with new coolant thinking everything will be grand after that but the temperature on my Power FC went up to 120 degrees. I have a Zerosports thermostat which is suppossed to open at 80 degrees. I checked the thermostat in a kettle of hot water and it does open. The fans kick in at 92 degrees but the temp just keeps rising. The new coolant started to boil then.

I dont think it is an air lock after filling with new coolant as I ran the car at idle with the header tank cap off.

so, anyone any ideas? Thanks.

could be a head gasket problem

i had the same problem and the head gasket was gone.. the fans would kick in and the rad was cold and the thermostat was closed, what happen's is the air gets traped behind the thermostat and does not get to temp to open etc... if you can get a block tests done on it that will tell if the exhaust gasses are going in to the water befor you start taking it apart...

check your reservoir if the water is boiling. if it is then head gasket is gone

thats very poor advice, as you get same happening when airlocked

just check your dip stick? and white sludge? or can you smell any fuel in the water system. Does sound a bit like a head gasket i'm affraid mate.

this is just based on theory on what scuubdoo story. since the head are aluminum they quite prone to warpage once overheat

head gasket! oh no! Whats involved with repairing that on a scooby?

there is no mayo like substance in the oil though?

Thermostat is a brand new Zerosports thermostat so it cant be that?

I have been told that air is trapped in the system but I have done everything I know of to try to get rid of it. i.e.....I left the header tank cap off and ran the car at idle. Isnt that suppossed to get the trapped air out?

i dont know on scoobys if that just works but there mite be one or two bleed screws possibly on the top or bottom coolant hoses or near the thermostat housing ?? someone with more scooby experiance will tell ya

finally got this sorted. eventually got the trapped air out. Jeez these cars are a bitch to get air out of the cooling system.

Thanks to everybody who replied with help.
