newbie with some questions

Just waiting for my registartion doc for my 97 type r and then I will be on the road hopefully going to a few meets. Checked with the DVLA in Chelmsford today after going down there last Friday and they still hadn't allocated a reg no. although they do it from that office.

What I would like to know is does anyone have a copy of a type r manual if such a thing exists. Willing to pay for it.

Can anyone advise on the best oil for;
Engine.
Gearbox.
Diffs

I did do a search but there are so many contradictions on what is the best to use.

If I can't get hold of a manual how easy is it to change the oil in the gearbox and diffs. Are there any tricks that I need to be aware of. Same goes with the engine. It may sound a silly question but some cars you need to turn over to get oil pressure up before starting.

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't really want to pay a garage to do things I should be capable of doing

Welcome aboard:luxhello:
There will be lots of information coming along, but I am in no way mechanicaly minded myself so can't help you there. As for the contradictions, you will have to work out what suits your needs. Everyones opinion is different on here, that is what makes it as good as it is!

Frayz approved engine oil change procedure.

-Run engine to temp.
-Drain hot oil
-Remove oil filter and discard.
-Clean all areas to a clinical finish.
-Pre fill new oil filter and allow to stand for about 10min and refil. (the level will drop)
-Smear a thin film of new oil on the oil filter seal and refit.
-Tighten sumpplug with new washer.
-Refill engine oil to max dipstick level.
-Unplug the crank position sensor.
-Crank the engine in 10 sec bursts untill the oil pressure light no longer illuminates.
-Refit the plug on the crank sensor.
-Start the engine for 10 secs.
-Recheck oil level and add as required.

For engine oil I would use Motul 300V, minimum weight 10W40, or Millers 10W60, please ignore the recommendations for 0W and 5W and for semi synthetics if you want your engine to last. Stick to genuine Subaru filters.

Gearbox and diff oil is straigthforward, you should see the drain bungs from underneath - refill the gearbox through the dipstick and the diff through the upper bung on the rear cover. Ideally the oil used should contain an LSD additive, both Motul and Millers will have something suitable as do Redline.
