Advice on laptop for spoilt child!

My nephew is getting a laptop from santa so as to free up his parents PC which he hogs!

He will be using it for playing games, surfing the web and other msn type activities.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent one around the £300 mark?

Not too clued up on graphics/sound cards etc etc...

Cheers

If he's so spoilt, why bother with a laptop? Just beat him like a ginger step-child.

a 300quid laptop wont play many older game titles let alone newer ones.

How old is he? With £300 it'll be hard to find a decent new laptop. Better of buying a desktop PC, you'll get more for your money and better specs too!

He's 10.

I've seen a few online at around the £300 mark such as this one

Amazon.co.uk: Acer Aspire 5315 Notebook, Celeron M530 1.73GHz, 15.4" TFT, 1024MB RAM, 80GB Hard-drive, DVD±RW, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, WiFi, Vista Home Basic: Electronics & Photo

Just wasn't sure if it was liable to be any good at that price.

Desktop PC isn't really viable due to the space it takes up.

I bought my sister (15) one for her Xmas. Had to spend £450 on a Tosh from Comet to get something decent.

If he was really spoiled he'd get a laptop for surfing and an XBox360/PS3 for games :)

No gonna play games.. laptops hold vlaue quite well and a gaming spec will cost around the 1k mark !

Obviously can find cheaper examples but I would buy a laptop for games unless I had the cash to play around with !!

£300 will buy you a medium desktop setup !

.....or buy a new tower..... transfer the internals of the old tower in the new one and give him that as a gift. and his parents would get a new laptop for themselves.

Acer Aspire's are the low end of Acer laptops and the new range wont even be advertised by Acer themselves, drop ship only ;)

Right, let me start off by saying that you could write what I know about PC/laptop specs on the back of a postage stamp! :lol1:

I was told he wanted it for games as well as surfing and msn etc, but he already has a PS2, Xbox 360 and a Wii, so I can safely assume that games won't really be played on it... :Suspiciou

Okay, forget the gaming angle then, are there any half decent spec laptops at around the £300 mark at all?

Links please!!! :thumb:

This is what I did - Buy a sh1t hot lap-top for yoursleves, leave the old pc with the spoilt kid in his room and make sure its stuffed to the gunnels with filters.

Get him something cheaper for christmas. Sorted :thumb:

Then the parents are at fault! Tell them to give him a clip about the ear if he's on it and daddy wants to surf pron .....

As for the laptop, I'd get a reasonable one which means it may last a bit longer. A 10 year old will soon learn to use all of it's *functionality* ....

With all due respect guys, I'm not after parenting techniques or advice on how my inlaws should bring their child up.

Cheers Sonic, I'll give them a look :thumb:
