Anti Virus

Hi guys
My Norton AV subscription has just run out and needs to be renewed

Are there any free AV progs available that would do the job just as well or should I just stump up for a new subscription with norton ??

Thanks for any help

Niall

AVG is meant to be pretty good as a free alternative. Think there is another decent free one called Avast! (or something like that).

AVG can be upgraded to a paid for version which I think includes spam/spyware checking, so might have a full feature match to Norton.

Really depends on what you want it for. I've got AVG and Ad-Aware 2007 (both free versions) running on most of my machines here and they are very happy. Certainly no slowdowns as I've seen with the resource hungry Norton.

Another vote for NOD32, I have it on both my PCs and wouldn't use anything else now. :)

NOD32 is good, but there is a new version out. At the moment there are some teething troubles with this version (3.xx). However, if you buy now you can also download and use the 2.xx version should you run into issues.

AVG free is fine for an antivirus program
AVG also do an antispyware program, which I recommend you use.

NOD32 does not currently stop adware cookies in firefox, but the AVG free spyware version does.

Currently I use NOD32 antivirus and AVG Antispyware 7.5 (free) and also WinPatrol (free).

NOD32 is great with viruses, and does some spyware
AVG does the cookies, and some spyware
Winpatrol guards my startup items (inc startup registry).

If anything gets past NOD32 and AVG (which it did for me last weekend :( ), when it trys to get itself installed so it can run at startup WinPatrol picks up the change to the registry...your last line of defence.

Yet Kaspersky won the recent PC Pro labs test.

PC Pro are known to be a little bit biased towards whoever has given them a freebie this week ;)

Looking at that lnk, the NOD 32 doesn't seem to be free, only a 30 day trial?

It isnt free but only £33 for 2 years, much better value than norton, and much more effective than the free ones

I ran AVG for years without problem.

And Nod32 is highly thought of as you can see.

Whatever you do, don't renew Norton. Uninstall and then find the software removal from Norton's website - which removes the stuff the uninstaller doesn't!

Then enjoy your faster, more secure PC

Apparently Avira is a good for a free one. I run Nod32 on my Vista partition and Kaspersky on my XP64 partition, I scan all my drives with both
