Bent A Con Rod
I was just driving on the motor way at 70 and half accelerated boost shot up to 1.6 Bar Boost cut come in then carried on driving ok. Then i pulled up 2 mins after and could here the engine knocking. Garage have stripped it down and ive bent a con rod. Can anyone explain how this has happened and what i can do to stop it happening again. MY00 Uk TURBO running 313BHP And 313Torque.

id say hitting 1.6 bar on standard internals would have done the trick,on another note i went one better/worse,ive snapped one on mine

If you have "bent" a rod, then it could be down to excessive compressive force
(high boost) causing it to buckle/bend or a cylinder of coolant will do the same. The Con rod is normally at its “most stressed” state at the maximum torque region and throw in a bit of detonation and its game over for standard rods. Mechanically over-revving(missed shift/hitting the limiter) can cause the rod to fail in the bolt/nut area of the big end cap. If you were suffering from det,you would normally see det damage and heat discoloration on the Piston crown/ring lands . The Version 7 rods are a better design than the earlier rods but if you are in search of horsepower/torque,then a set of forged rods and race spec bearings are a must have(along with forged pistons). Without seeing the failed engine, it just an "educated call". |
