Road Mongrels

So myself, the wife, and our 6 month old travelled from Berkshire to Shropshire this weekend to see my parents.

On the drive back home today I encountered some of the most idiotic drivers I have every seen.

Top of the list was the driver of an otherwise inconspicuous 02 plate Golf GTI.
Just after the toll gate on the M6 toll heading south, we overtook this car going around 75-80. As we passed him, he waved his finger as if to say, 'go on, give it some, lets 'av it'.

We passed him, pulled back in to the centre lane and continued at the same speed.
The next time I look in the mirror and he's about 2 metres off my rear bumper, flashing his lights.
So we slow down slightly and he goes to pass, and when alongside us, he makes the same hand gesture that he did before and then floors it.

It's not my thing anyway, but obviously with my family on board I'm not going to engage in any such lunacy.

Anyway, about 5 minutes later, still doing the same speed, we pass the Golf, as he's going slow in the inside lane, about to turn off at a junction.

As we pass, he's laughing hysterically like a lunatic, whilst doing the thumbs-down.
It honestly was one of the strangest sights ive seen on the road.
He looked like a certified lunatic, on day release. A cross between rainman and the hunchback of notre-dame.

I'm still kind of puzzled as to what was going through the numpties mind.
The only thing I can think of is that he thought he 'beat me' in a race?

Anyway, that was just one of many of the road mongrels I encountered today. Anyone else unfortunate enough to be on the roads on a Sunday?

thats so funny!... i bet he's chuffed to bits that he won .. haha

shockingly, there are people a lot more weird than that one!

exvaux 02 December 2007 07:33 PM

best not to rise to them,im amazed how many half wits think because they overtake you that makes their saxo vts faster than a 300 bhp 2 dr impreza

streetbeats 02 December 2007 07:37 PM

the weirdest thing was that the guy must have been mid 30s or something.

was honestly really surreal!

shaunywrx 02 December 2007 07:42 PM

He'll be posting on his golf forum later, how he blew away a 400bhp modded scooby, then probably come on here, and post that a golf is faster than a subaru.:lol1:

Yeah you get a few like that. Took the RA out today to get it filled up with some V-Power crack cocaine. As I pulled into the Shell petrol station there was a guy (probably also in his 30's) with a half baked Mk5 escort, red in colour, no side skirts and white front and rear bumpers that looked like he had just tacked em on.

I had absolutely no intention of racing him or pushing my car for that matter as I was driving home so wanted to let the turbo cool down and keep my fuel in check.

The idiot was waiting for me to exit the station, as I pulled out and joined a carriage way, he undertakes me on the near side (I was in the right lane heading towards a roundabout) he gives his car hell, you could hear the poor engine screaming all the time he is trying to engage eye contact with me. My windows are slightly tinted so I used that as an excuse not to even look at him and just pootled along at 30 mph as I approached the roundabout.

He pulled in front of me at the roundabout but the noises his poor car made as he gave it hell just to pass me at pedestrian speeds.

I am sure the car attracts the lunatics but you have to wonder what the hell is going through their mind.

As a kind gesture I switched to the near side lane on the roadabout and proceeded to get around very quickly and disappear off into the distance, just to let him know I was paying attention slightly.

gallois 02 December 2007 07:55 PM

even though some people don't go about it the right way, i think that they really want to just see what it is capable of, as surely the guy couldn't possibly think he had any hope of out dragging you. surely?

MikeyTang 02 December 2007 08:01 PM

guess there are similar threads on porsche when they come across scooby drivers that do the same and think they blew away a 911 turbo in a standard STI

Top Gear | The Stig's lap times

If it was the stig driving both, it sounds like they actually might have. I'm sure in a straight line though, the porsche would leave an STI for dead.

hux309 03 December 2007 09:00 PM

What i can't understand i would be driving along 70-75ish overtaking cars as you do and you always get the odd numpty who just doesn't like you overtaking them and they immediately proceed to put their foot down.

Odd thing is today it was a 406 bottom range pug, what are running through these people's minds sure as hell beats me.

streetbeats 03 December 2007 09:30 PM

yeah, thats really annoying!
just like the ones who overtake you whilst you are maintaining a constant speed, then slow down in front of you!

hrness 03 December 2007 09:34 PM

give em eye contact, thumbs up at the lights, blip the engine a few times, then watch em scream off while u turn left, love it. lol

Certain Cretains,

hate Scoobs, Owners, drivers, etc of the Marque.

They just wish they could have one.

Envy is Green.

Drive your way.

Feck em.

:luxhello: :luxhello: :luxhello:

Keep your Scoob

And your pride.

Pretty soon they'll be inside.

Ditch, Nick, wherever.

Knobs are Knobs. (Like the sound of that, could be a TV Series)

Rise above it.

Regards

Alan MaC ;) ;) ;)

Clearly not his mental age!! ;) :D

I know this story only too well!

GazTheHat 04 December 2007 11:59 AM

Happens quite a bit, but it's normally me laughing at them.

The rookie 04 December 2007 12:07 PM

My mate used to have a 1.6 Impreza wagon, he still had all the saxo's etc in the neighbourhood trying to get him to race - too dim to not even notice the absence of a bonnet scoop.....thats why I like my Forester, no one tries to race me! (just as well probably mind you on the stock hairdryer!)

Some nob in an e36 m3 tried it on with me the other week, he tried so hard his car kicked out loads of smoke on gear change, i wasnt up for racing so let him past

He volleyed iit up the dual carriage way, the tried to take a roundabout at about 60-70 (tool), then lost the back end and ended swapping ends and looking at me as i bumbled past laughing my tits off!!!!

He must have only been about 22!!!! (daddies car???)

People carriers and pov spec BMW 3 series drivers seem the worst for doing this, then there's white van man...

Had a idiot this morning behind me trying to race. Looked in my mirror and could see a badly done version of a subaru scoop stickng out the bonnet. so pulls in lets the retard overtake. He was driving a 1.6 astra with a scoop on front a trolley handle sticking out the back and a big bean can exhaust. He proceeds to try and boot it away, i was keeping up with him at 30mph. you just wonder what they think about when they put that stuff on there car, do they think that a fake scoop and a spoiler bigger than an F1 car will make them go faster.

Yes, they do! :)

I once had a chav in a 1.4 tell me that he'd "blow me away". I politely said that I very much doubted it, as even if my car was std, he was very significantly outgunned in bhp and torque, I then went on to disclose that mine wasn't std- I had 320 of each.

His response:

"Don't mean s*it bro: i got an induction kit on this; it'll have ya"

Hard to argue with that! ;) :D

yeah its not worth the petrol or effort to put them in there place. I would be embarrased to drive around in one of they heaps of ****e but they think it is great (by they i mean the dim witted saxo, corsa, astra, pug, and focus drivers )

spleenmachine 04 December 2007 06:46 PM

I've still got me last car: a standard 1.6 fiesta zetec s and i would say i get more wound up and wanna race more than when im driving my scooby

like if i take the fiesta to the jetwash i get older people looking at me like im chav scum cleaning my boyracer penis extension and i get chav scum trying to race me

all the while im raging inside at them both thinking If only you knew ive got a scooby at home 1: they wouldnt be looking at me like that &

2: them chavs wouldnt know what hit em :lol1:

When its the scoobies turn at the jetwash its a different story, people admire it and wish they had one chavs look but dont want to embarrass themselves infront of the under age school girls they have in the backseat.

BUT when im driving the scoob i dont bite at anything and never race anyone just toddle along thinking i dont have to prove myself

and that p**ses everyone off :lol1:

Alan MaC 04 December 2007 10:28 PM

At £1.06 a litre PLUS for Optimax, you really have to vet whether it's worth the juice or not.

I had a Focus up my bottie in twistie roads this evening, trying to get into my ashtray.

Accelerating, braking just as he was nearly inthe spare wheel bay in the boot.

I just wasn't bothered,/intersted, he found a little bit of a straight and off he went past me, I just stuck to the same speed, he struggled a bit and, another car was coming the other way.

He cut in front, I had to brake to let him in.

He then blew his horn, waved at me, braked etc.

Got to the Roundabout, he's still waving (his Lady looked a bit embarressed) and pulled in the qeue behind him and read the badge, it's a TDI Focus.

Good luck to him, I think he was miffed when I couldn't be a***d playing.

Happy Motoring.

Regards.

Alan MaC;)
