The weekend just got expensive!
 

Just took the dog for a walk and he appears to have hurt his leg rather badly on a shop windowframe.

So much so that he had cars stopping to offer help, people coming out of houses and shops and people diverting on their walk.

A painful 10 min walk home later, painful for me carrying him (22kgs) and now I have decided to call the emergency vet.

£75 emergency fee + consultation fee + any treatments or medication.

you got pet insurance by any chance

my boxer when he was about a year old started to chase after something when he was on his lead and he spun round in the air because i was holding onto him and landed on his rear leg on tarmac he couldnt walk for about an hour then all of a sudden he just started running about the house :freak3:
some vets bills are stupid they can charge more than it is to service a car

mine hasnt been a cheap one and it nearly got dearer,
i bought the wife a ring for xmas and lost it couldnt find it anywhere id put it in the bin tidying up

Yeah got insurance, and will be giving them a call. Main thing right now is to get him the medical help he needs.

He is trying to walk on it, but still crying a lot when he tries, so something is definatly up.

As for worth it. Not bothered about a single penny, covered or not, he is most definatly worth it. :)

i totally agree ,mine is just like my 2 children behave's just like them can be good but at the same time just as naughty but we all love him

Hope it works out ok. Our old dobey slipped off a step and knacked the cartalidge in his hind knee.

Put it this way, one plastic cartilidge later and a humungus vet bill, he was running about as loopy as ever :rolleyes:

Its the second time he has done something to this leg. he too slipped off a step a couple of weeks back.

Got an appointment for 3.30

Hope he is ok, I know what it's like, mine ate some dried smelly mushroom things that women like to put in bowls. Had to remove all his stomach and wash it out then spent a week in the vets recovering.

Not a clue whats wrong.
Monitor him over night and if he is still in pain and not walking too well, get him off to my own vets in the AM.

Might just be bruising.


In which case an nights rest and some tlc will see him ok.

Thats nothing...took my lurcher to the vet on sat with a lump on his leg - she wants him in on Friday to amputate the whole limb! Thick end of £1k and i dont get to keep the leg to scare the kids!

Yeah seems it is muscular, or so im hoping, I will administer the TLC, Tam aint coming near him lol

That's a bummer - especially for doggie. Is vet just assuming it's the big C without any tests and so has to take such drastic action or what? dl

If you can locate where the pain it use a pack of frozen peas to cool the joint both sides for 5 minutes each side. Repeat hourly.

I'd definitely advocate pet insurance, especially for dogs as even fairly simple treatments can run into hundreds quite easily ( and dogs have a habit of injuring themselves in stupid ways ! ).

Apart from meaning you dont need to fork out, you also dont need to worry if it is something really expensive - wouldnt want to be in the position where you knew your dog could get treatment and you have to think 'can I afford £2000 or whatever ! ).

My dog had similar. And it ended up being a bit of wood stuck in his paw. Even the vets missed it twice.

Me? No.....have 2 dogs that have never needed a thing so still well in pocket by paying cash as i go (may get the black and decker out and save even more ;) )

I would never have a dog and no insurance, seems very unfair on the pet, they should have the best care that is on offer. The first bill for my staffie was £1900 when he was just 3 months old the second was £500 just a few months later. All had to pay was £80 each time, the insurance picked up the rest. Cost's me 15 quid a month.

He has been fully examined and aint giving nothing away. Im personally sure its his left hip, but she refuses to make any sounds being examined.

Still walking awkwardly today and has let off a few yelps, which is enough for me to take him back in to the vets today.
Frustrating as hell.

Managed to stand on his back legs for long enough last night to nick the remains of a joint of lamb off the kitchen work surface though lol.

MOK79, checked and checked again mate, nothing. He is actually appearing to walk lame on his whole left side, which just makes it even more confusing.

As for insurance, £25 a month well spent imo. As long as im allowed to claim lol.

Sorry to hear about your poor dog. Glad you are insured, we did that for our new cat too-well worth it I think.

Of course there are arguments for pet insurance but........ 3 dogs for say 12 years at £180 each per annum totals £6480. You have to be a bit unlucky to be hit for that amount. We decided to insure our mutts for the first 18 months as that can be the time when any serious faults might need sorting and then take a chance recognising that when dogs are old then we are probably going to get some big bills. The flaw in my argument is that I can't discipline myself to stick 3 x £180 per year in a doggy savings box :) dl

As above...all insurance is based on the idea that (on average) you pay MORE for the insurance than you will ever get back (otherwise wheres the profit for the insurance comp! ) With some things (car, house, life) being unlucky means hundreds of thousands.....with a pet the worse case is only a few k - so unless you are hard up, self insuring is best for most people - anything else is a savings plan with a negative return.
