Grown ups using consoles...

...strikes me as a little odd.
Sure many many hours were "wasted" playing Amiga games in my teens but I found my taste for them left as I "grew up"

Has been bugging me for a while - grown men pretending to drive F1 cars/ fly jets/ be SAS soldiers - :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Have you played on a console recently? Just like watching a film it's a form of entertainment. If you don't enjoy them then that's your shout. You don't have to stop having fun when you get older you know ;)

hux309 01 December 2007 11:35 AM

Yup, no point in sitting around having no fun, we all need a bit of escapism from time to time so consoles/pc's are great for this.

I've seen what they "can do" but it almost makes if even funnier.
We have a lot more fun going out, surfing, cycling, running, socialising in the "real" world.

Playing computer games is fine if done socially (say a football competition or something) but sitting there for hours on end pretending you are flying an F22 is a bit sad really.

Certain degree of trolling going on here but I'll humour you...

Yes there are sad geeks who will lock themselves away for hours on end playing games with no interaction with others. That's not the main though. Most people will play a game rather than watch an hours Tv. great fun to be had racing your virtual car round a track having a laugh talking to makes doing the same in the race. Seems if you're dismissing that then you're mssing out on some fun to me.

As for the things you do well guess what you can still do those things as well... it's not an either or ;)

Hepy 01 December 2007 12:09 PM

Do you do much fishing when you're at the beach surfing? You seem to be doing a lot of it on this thread.

KiwiGTI 01 December 2007 12:14 PM

Well the straight answer is they usually appeal to people with an intelligence level higher than average. If you don't get that then I'm afraid you are just one of these sporting boofheads.

zs_phil 01 December 2007 12:20 PM

Yeah, but us 'Grown Ups' grew up with games, the first generation to do so, so there is no precedent set, now for me I am still interested but cant really devote much time to it, if it makes you happy and doesnt hurt anyone else, isnt an obsession at the expense of the rest of your life then whats the problem.

Watching films is the same, just something to escape for a while, as to be honest Computer Databases aren't really that exciting.

dunx 01 December 2007 01:12 PM

When I worked shifts, (nights !) I came in knackered physically, but not tired enough to sleep. An hour of GT3 on PS2 was enough to put me over the edge, then off too sleep. Not through boredom I have to add....

Dunx

Now work days and can't find enough time to use it. Too busy trying to fix Vista....

I'm 27 now, I've had a Texas Ti, Amiga 500, Snes, Game Boy, PS, PS2, XBox, Game Boy Advance, PSP and now a Wii.

It doesn't rule my life and I generally only play on a weekend. Where else can you shoot zombies or jump on mushrooms!!

That will explain why I have a PS, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, 360, PSP, DS and Wii :smug:

Iain Young 02 December 2007 07:12 PM

Personally, I never intend to grow up :D

There were a few zombies when I went actually!

New_scooby_04 03 December 2007 12:06 PM

I think it's a generation thing: if you're in you're late twenties/early thirties, you've probably grown up with them, from the laughably simple days of the Atari VCS to the monster 360s and PS3s. I don't think the current generation will witness leaps forwards of that magnitude.

But in 20 years I may be eating my words! :)

Dream Weaver 03 December 2007 02:35 PM

I'd rather do the odd hours gaming, then catching some waves with a load of pretend "surf dudes", who really want to live in Oz, but have to put up with the **** weather of Cornwall, and then reckon the waves are "just as good" as anywhere else? ;)

To most of us, wearing a wetsuit and standing on some plastic covered polystyrene "riding the waves" (probably in pissing rain) is fairly pathetic. :D

davegtt 03 December 2007 02:42 PM

What else are you supposed to do when you stay at home ill one day, Day time TV = rubbish, get on the sofa and chill with the xbox doesnt get much better :D

Of course it gets better than that:

Xbox, beer (or booze of choice - I don't like beer) nibbles and a BJ from the GF....although that will impeed your ability to get a high score!

How I laughed at all the folks in the USA mocking my pathetic attempts to play Halo 3....untill I realized we'd left the X box live webcam on!!!!!

;) :D

davegtt 03 December 2007 03:18 PM

:lol1: Xbox is always accomapanied with a beer, ill or not :D although getting a BJ off the misses whislt concentrating on gaming would definately be out of the question.

:lol1: Liking the thought of the web cam being left on, that would be funny.

Sorry you can't get your head around it - don't let it bother you too much.

Each to their own and all that...

GazTheHat 03 December 2007 03:32 PM

Wish i had the time to play consoles.

I loved games and envy people playing all the latest games. As you get older are there less hours in a day?!!?

StickyMicky 03 December 2007 04:08 PM

always with beer, not sure about the BJ from the missus, i tend to stamp my feet and make awkward movements with my arms when i get headshotted in gears of war, could put the jewels at high risk of teeth marks

not when you employ younger people to do your work for you :D

logiclee 04 December 2007 11:02 AM

I'm a complete gadget freak, I always like to have a good spec desktop and laptop, Camera, always the latest home cimema, HD DVD/Blu ray, phone, RC Cars, mood lamp or any other tech thing that catches my eye.

I never really got into the gaming thing except for the odd driving sim or quake on the pc, never seem to have the time. I did try earlier this year and bought a new high spec desktop pc and added a top flight video card but still haven't got round to tying it out fully. :Whatever_
If I'm not at work at the weekend I tend to go away so it's mostly midweek evenings only and it wouldn't go down to well at home to dissapear for a few hours. Spend enough time on the net and Forums as it is which is probably sadder than gaming. :lol1:
Probably have some gaming fun with my Brother in Law over Chiristmas as he's a gaming fan and will come over with the PS3 but that's about it.

Cheers
Lee

Give Call of Duty 4 a go on your PC. At least download the demo. Splendid. Show's you what a PC is for (bar the obvious - oh and digital photos etc.).

I got a PC in 1992 after seeing Doom run on a frinds 486 sx33. Also used to borrow a friends Amiga to play monkey island 1 and 2 and speedball.

I started gaming on the internet about as Quake 2 was launched, haven't really stopped gaming since. It doesn't really stop me going out, working, drinking, driving (not together), or spending time with my lovely lady.

As others have added a list. I'll surprise myself....

Original Atari Console
Spectrum 48k
Spectrum +
Mega Drive
Playstation
Dreamcast
Playstation 2
Xbox
PSP
xbox 360
Wii
PS3

Gaming is great fun.

Arbiter 04 December 2007 04:50 PM

How is using a games console any worse than using a PC to wind people up on an internet forum?
