Gone for 2 years, coming back for month, What to expect?

It's just over 2 years ago that I left the UK for a new life in Spain and I have learnt more about myself in those 2 years than in the previous 34. I'm coming back for a month from mid December as I have spent the last 2 Christmas here away from my wifes family and our friends and am very interested to see what has changed in those 2 years.

Prime ministers, wheelie bins and probably the yoof culture but anything else to be aware of I wonder....?

From 2 years ago? Absolutely nothing. Wheelie bins and "yoofs" have existed far longer than that.

Everyone has their own flying car, entire meals come in pill form, and the country is run by DAMN DIRTY APES.

I got a grey bin for general crap, a blue one for paper, tins etc and a brown one for garden waste, weeds, grass clippings, broken wheelbarrows etc.

I think all the waste still ends up in the same landfill, but it makes the council look like they are being environmentally friendly :thumb:

davegtt 22 November 2007 03:15 PM

I got a black one for general waste, food etc. Grey one for recyclables and Green for garden rubbish

you will be fast tracked through customs, have preferential benefits with regards housing, education, medical health care, probably even get free dental treatment. The air is a lot fresher, the only thing is apparently there are lots of metal cylindrical things around. Sorry got that last bit wrong its poles :lol1:

EddScott 22 November 2007 03:18 PM

I've got a couple of poles which assist the wife with hanging the washing out to dry. :thumb:

Can be a good time to visit if she's not used to the severe heat of summer just yet. Last Christmas day we were on the roof terrace in just a pair of shorts (not my Mrs, obviously!) and it can hit around 70 degrees which is lovely but next day can get cold again. That'll be our biggest shock - wearing coats and scarves again...I actually miss the frosts!

New_scooby_04 22 November 2007 03:48 PM

What to expect?

A chorus of people you know back here saying: "You're not very brown are you?"

Oh, and the seasonal flu!

;) :D

Granada? :)

We're the same though. Wife just wrote an article for her expat women's mag that said how we drove a couple of hours north to see the beautiful autumn colours that we were missing so much. Editor replied and said "I used to fly to Switzerland to see them!"

Too true, that's what's weird. We are an hour from a client of mine in the mountains at Granada and last Christmas day when we were on the terrace in shorts and tee shirts they had over a foot of snow. It is possible to swim in the med in the morning and ski in the afternoon which takes a bit of getting used to. By having no frosts or extremities in winter ourselves, as I'm sure is the same for you, it makes all the seasons almost merge into one and things like Christmas seem very unchristmassy here, hence why it'll be nice, if only for a few weeks, to see a bit of frost and typical blighty weather again. It's the darkness during the daytime I can't stand though...

How true is that. People in UK seem to think all we do is sit in the sun drinking San Miguel all day....

....I spend at least an hour in front of the TV at night as well ;)

Wife was in London last weekend, she said exactly the same - "so nice to have cold weather at Christmas time". We've said it for years.

I think it's true to say the last time I touched snow on the ground (as opposed to wet flurries or seeing it briefly out of the window while transiting in Frankfurt) was six years ago  I love snow :(
