Can Blu-Ray be played back on a PC like HD ?

Is this possible

Say if I download a Blu Ray video can I watch it on my PC, like I can with HD ?

Jamz3k 19 November 2007 06:51 PM

if you download a blu-ray disk it technically isn't blu-ray, its just HiDef Content. I'm nearly sure Blu-ray now use the same codecs at HD-DVD

I could be wrong though!

Its unlikely though Steve, because Blu-Ray contains a lot more (more difficult) copy protection. Thats the principal reason that the MPAA have embraced it and why Bill Gates was so opposed to it (because of the practical problems it creates: not because he is the skankers friend!).

Can't be that hard to get around, ive seen plenty or br rips kicking about as well as hd dvd.

You can watch it on a pc but you will need something like power dvd ultra which is br and hd dvd playable.

Also your pc needs to be hdcp compliant, the monitor and gfx card otherwise power dvd won't let it happen.

Cheers, i didnt know if anyone had got around all that protection malarky by now :D

I have seen quite a growing number of Blu Ray rips knocking about hence my original question :)

yeah, around the 30gig mark too!!! :crikey:

I would have thought those rips just play in any old media player like BSplayer or KMPlayer. They are rips, not the original thing, right? So the rip will just be data at a high res that needs the right filter to play. I don't even think you will need HDCP stuff, as its no longer in the Blue Ray or HD format, just high res video like any uber pc game.

For the rips typically no, they are usually ripped and converted to divx/xvid.

I believe br and hd dvd use evo files

I have numerous hd content and km player plays them all fine, i was talking about the direct br/hd dvd files themselves, more so for br.

You can use a program from Slysoft called AnyDVD HD to playback Blu-ray and HDDVD discs it removes the encryption. You need Power DVD to playback decrypted BR & HD DVD evo files.

Defeated already? Well: on the strength of that (American porn industry support notwithstanding), I dont hold out much hope for HD-DVD.

lol

Its always the case, bring out something copy protected and it will usually be cracked/hacked etc within a very short time of its release :)

you can buy pc bluray units for about £150

Computer Supplies from Novatech do them

Has DVD Audio been defeated???

Sonic' 20 November 2007 08:49 AM

Yes :)

Unless the encryption methods have been completly re-written or altered recently

Simon 69 20 November 2007 11:17 AM

Ive just read-up on CPPM and it took them over five years! It was only worked around in 2005: you still cant duplicate a DVD audio disc though.

Simon 69 20 November 2007 11:28 AM

Im not sure that Blu-Ray has been circumvented either. You may be able to get the data off the disc, but youve only fully defeated the CP when you can write a new disc in a similar format and play it on a commercial player...
