gtr rip off

the nissan GTR is approx £30k in US and japan, but nissan UK say it will cost circa £55k here because they "need to train up their service staff and besides we havent even setup up dealerships yet!" why that bumps the price per car up by almost double is a mystery, on a similar note, ford is releasing a special edition mustang "bullit", looks gorgeous, circa £15k in america yes the same price as a basic spec mondeo, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Rip off Britain?

Which, after what I read in Evo, doesn't make any sense - as they need to do the exact same setting up with the "high-performance" dealerships in the US and Japan as they do here.

Think its just the simple fact that they'll charge it - because they can.

There's no such thing as rip off Britain. Compare prices with countries other than the US or Japan, or something other than cars.

Err, been on a train recently and I just paid £1.12 a litre @ 80% tax for fuel. D

Explorer 15 November 2007 10:30 PM

just a massive con like everything

logiclee 15 November 2007 10:35 PM

Prices of cars in the US are always well below the UK price even on UK made cars.

Turn it round the other way American cars like Chrysler and Jeep the price in $'s in the US is usually similar to the UK price in £'s. As a pound is currently worth two dollars we pay double.

Cheers

auto express (this weeks) said it was import taxes and having to convert it to uk spec (emissions, etc) why it costs so much more ?????????????

25k more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

NotoriousREV 15 November 2007 10:50 PM

£30k + 10% import duty = £33k

£33k + 17.5% VAT = £38,775

Shipping + remap about £1k, so you should be able to get yourself a JDM model for £15k less than the UK price. If you want one, vote with your feet and use an importer.

The new Lancer Evolution X costs $33,000, which is under £17,000!

MikeCardiff 16 November 2007 08:27 AM

Apart from economies of scale, there are other reasons -

1) the car is cheaper in Japan because its made there, hence no added shipping costs to send it to the other side of the world.

2) In the USA, the Japanese companies dont sell many cars because a lot of the yanks still hate the Japanese, so they often sell at very little profit to try and get sales and compete with the US made cars.

3) State tax compared to VAT

4) They may be cheaper in the US or Japan, but I bet they are cheaper to buy in the UK than in Switzerland and many other countries.

If you look in general at world prices, the UK is about in the middle for most things, but rather than say how happy we are that we are cheaper than half the the countries in the world, we moan that we are more expensive than the other half !

If you really believe the prices are that much cheaper in the US, then personally import a new car from there ( remembering it will be LHD ! ) and see how little you save after you pay the transport costs and taxes. The same applies for Japan, if the new cars offered that much of a saving, there would be loads of companies in the UK importing brand new cars and selling them for 40% less than the dealers here were.

Diesel 16 November 2007 06:40 PM

Does the US have VAT and car tax? Or State and Federal tax as they might call it...?

BULLITT 16 November 2007 06:43 PM

They have a road tax I think, but I don't think they call it. Hence why you always hear Yank cops saying "Your 'Tags are expired" think thats along the same lines as our annual road tax payment. I'm sure one of the american members can clarify...

logiclee 16 November 2007 10:36 PM

I think each state has it's own purchase tax for cars sales.

Not an expert just watched a few "King of Cars" on Bravo. :lol1:

Toyota are the biggest car seller in the United States. They sold 197,592 vehicles last month.

The GTR is getting released in Aus and the rumours are that it will be around the AUD 120k mark which is higher than purchasing in Japan so it isn't just the UK...

Wakey, wakey.

UK is the most expensive country in the EU

Diesel 17 November 2007 09:52 AM

Nice to have an utterly conclusive thread on SN :luxhello: We all know we get ripped off on many things that many other countries manage to charge their citizens fair prices on. GOD these train prices are such an example - they wanted £145 for a trip that cost me only £28 in Diesel the other day. Carbonfootprint-tastic mate! D

Careful - they'll use that as an excuse to raise the cost of fuel by 20,000%, rather than drop the cost of a train fare ;)

Dont also forget that when you import from Japan you get this:

so you will need a new sat nav and a few buttons.

Or learn Kanji if you're a cheapskate :lol1:

MrRA 17 November 2007 04:15 PM

Litcho is taking orders for the new GTR right now. It will be interesting to see the price he can sell them for. :D

going back to the USA thing, bearing in mind japan drive on the right side of the road like us, so surely its going to cost a hell of a lot more to redesigned the interior put the steering wheel on the other side plus other mechanical things, just for the US market? still doesn't make sense, i can understand japan being cheaper with it being built over there but not the US
