Max HP from TD05 16g

As title, what's the highest power a 16g will produce and at what boost pressure.

Cheers,

Micky.

bruce 10 November 2007 09:24 AM

On my 2.5 at 1.45bar mine produced 341BHP with 357lbs/ft torque. Thats with 440cc injectors running a raised fuel pressure.

silent running 10 November 2007 10:33 AM

Well mine's on a 2.0 at 1.45 bar and it feels like around 320bhp. I'll find out later this month what it actually makes, or as close as rollers can measure.

Andy.F 10 November 2007 11:10 AM

Depends on the set up and the fuel. I had 369bhp out of my old RA many years ago, it ran in the 11's in that spec.

JAPSU 10 November 2007 04:50 PM

Well if you look at the specs of a new 16g they say because of the bigger waste gate on the 16g its good for 380bhp - 505 CFM on stock fuel system and can handle 25psi - 28psi

mickywrx 10 November 2007 05:25 PM

Thanks for your replies.

silent running 11 November 2007 10:14 AM

IIRC the compressor map for a stock TD05H-16G shows that although it can make 1.7 to 1.8 bar at a push, it's totally being caned at that kind of boost pressure and will be running far too hot. The widest efficiency island is actually at 1.0 bar.

SoNiCa 11 November 2007 02:53 PM

Not been on the rollers but my ass dyno measures 380 hp at 22 psi with a Super16G (595CFM). This is just guess though :D

RA95 11 November 2007 07:17 PM

I have a highly modified 95 RA. Almost everything except the turbo has been upgraded in fact.

It's running 370.

dazzlers82 11 November 2007 09:23 PM

had mine on the rollers a couple of weeks ago standard 16g with api variable rate injectors an it went 331bhp an 329.5 lb ft at 1.45 bar:thumb:

Midlife...... 11 November 2007 11:52 PM

Micky

I ran my bugeye on an Andy F front entry TD05 16G at just under 1.5 Bar with the usual mods at 325 BHP............mapped by Bob Rawle :D

Shaun

Sam Stephenson 07 April 2018 06:48 PM

With 800cc injectors and ported head running at 26 psi I make 380whp

joz8968 07 April 2018 06:52 PM

Now that's what I call a thread resurrection!

All but 10yrs & 5mths.

Tidgy 07 April 2018 10:33 PM

haha yeah and total bs, 16g making 380 at the wheels, pmsl

Totally. That'd be like around 475bhp at the fly*!

The 16g (at least as we in the UK know it) is a 350bhp turb...at the fly...at best! Which is only 280* at the wheels!

* Assuming a c.20% drivetrain loss.
And even then, that's being very conservative - what being AWD and all!

Looking at location hes from over the pond so 380 would be at the fly, but still optimistic at best.

Think I can resolve this one on May 10 at Surrey RR ,
I will post the curve after Duncan does his thing afterwards.

I have the TD05H-16G on a MY05 WRX PPP
Turbine Wheel Diameter: 49.2MM/56MM.
Compressor Trim: .49AR.Compressor Wheel Diameter: 48.3MM/68MM.
Nozzle Area: 7CM².
Inject DkBlue 550s (WRX06)
Prodrive exhaust single Cat - (Decat Uppipe )
Walbro 255 lph
Mildly ported heads (chamber smoothed to help prevent detonation)*
Head is machined for 3mm deeper plug position*
(flush to chamber indexed to intake side)*
Plugs are NGK Iridium 7
Large TMIC
Kinguwa Waste gate (1.0 bar spring might change down to a 0.8 bar)*
2 port. ( might change to 3 port on the Dyno day)
new items * Currently twin road mapped by JGM 1.0 & 1.2 bar.

Ahead of re-mapping I hoping for 340 lb/ft @4000 / 340 bhp @5600
and torque 200 lb/ft @3250 250 lb/ft @3500 at 1,2 bar. Fuel will be Aral 102

I might go to 1.3 bar to achieve it, but after this point its the wrong turbo and
too far outside of its efficient flow range curve (1.0-1.2 bar).

I don't think you will see a single cat WRX with TD05H 16G do more on a UK fuel.
but Id like to hear if it happens at Surrey RR.

PS The Turbo will make 1.9-2.0 bar if not gated ( horror )
I did see that before as the manual boost limiter failed ( I won't do that again.)

Regards Ralph

Mine, and me being the OP, did 330/289 bhp/lbft @ 1 bar.

Linksfahrer 27 April 2018 01:30 PM

Micky :thumb: Even on Aral 102 I don't think I will beat your figure at 1.0 bar.

If I can keep one of the twin maps at 1.0 bar, I will ask Duncan for a curve. but... >330hp at 1.0 bar is quite a hurdle.

The idea behind the Wastegate, head Mods & Large TMIC together with Aral 102 was to give more scope for torque build through higher boost and latitude to timing advance + fuelling before detonation. Obviously for peak power the Cat will rob me of the headline figure but Cat-Convertor's are mandatory for German TÜV.

I feel the gains in drivability are to be had anyway in the torque curve and to achieve improvements here I need a quick spool up. Other turbo's undoubtedly do it better and faster , but this is a $250 bolt on. The head work is all my own so that arguably costs nothing. The Actuator spring changes and the flow / chamber improvements should get me slightly quicker on boost and let me hold safely it a touch higher in mid range.

The idea was born 27/03/14 on the A162 with Simon wincing as I floored the throttle on his command, "I'm glad you only have about 300 at this point. But with this fuel we can take it higher in Surrey once you have the WG actuator changed".

mickywrx 28 April 2018 08:04 PM

Ralph, mine is limited by the fact that on the face of it, it's fairly standard car. Yeah it's got an FMIC and decat system, but, that was pretty much it when it was last on the rollers in 2007. It was still running a standard fuel pressure regulator.

Good luck getting what you're looking for power wise, I think you'll be around the same BHP as me with more torque. :)

MartynJ 02 May 2018 11:51 AM

We've seen some cracking figures from the Mamba Billet 16G hybrid. It's relatively inexpensive considering it's a 400bhp turbo and spools very well.
We've sold a fair few and never had one back over the 3 or so years we've been using them.

But if I am not mistaken Mickey has an original Subaru "classic TD05 16G"

Sorry I don't see much to shout about.

Mamba Billet 16G hybrid relative inexpensive ? " delivered is @ circa 400 pounds + UK local + import taxes ?

The Mamba "Billet" in std form has the same wheel dimensions as my PRC Turbo (see above) but comes from Taiwan.

I don't see that ever producing 400HP on a 2.0 liter anywhere near or inside inside the efficient flow range < 1.2 Bar

That sort of power level / flow range that is needed for 400 HP is at least a TD05 18G or more probably TD05 20G territory.

Henrik 02 May 2018 07:20 PM

Interesting about the mamba td05, martyn.

I've got an old school (td06 based, but with a billet 20g wheel) sc42 fitted to my blob WRX 2.1 engine... Not driven it yet, but I expect it to be relatively laggy, so might look into a mamba / other billet td05-16 or 20, if it turns out to be undriveable.

Sadly I don't have funds or almost 2k for a blouch type turbo, so the td05 turbos appeal (and I like the way they drive anyway)

ossett2k2 02 May 2018 08:07 PM

Why would you think an sc42 would be laggy?
I run one in my 2.0 and it's Far from laggy,ok it's a ts billet but non avcs, hits full boost 1.6bar by 4k rpm,I suspect with avcs and a proper mapper(I'm a novice) it would be even less.

20G's rarely do 400 on 2.0L's on pump fuel etc, IMHO.

Because before the sc42 became Garret based it was based on a td06 with a 20g billet wheel, with a 7cm exhaust housing (I'm talking like 2010).

This is the one I have (swapped it for my td05-20g), so we shall see how laggy it ends up.

ossett2k2 02 May 2018 09:09 PM

I've always thought of the sc range as blouch.
Interesting fact Henrik that the sc42 was originally based on the td06 :thumb:
Will be nice to see how it compares.

Well here it is for what its worth :( The headline is quite a disappointment.

At 1.2 bar we made 300 and at 1.4 bar it struggled to 311Hp and 300lb/ft.

The comment from Duncan is you are losing a lot while the "Standard" Cat is still in place. His opinon "at least 20hp" and with a full 3 inch system perhaps 30hp. Actually you could sense this happening sitting in Surrey RR and listing to the power runs and watching the graph on the big screen repeater. The initial roar sounds great but it becomes muted as the revs rise. Driving the car is the same, the initial punch at 3500 is there all right but it is increasingly asthmatic from 5k up. seems I have created a real bottle neck:cry:, To top it off I also have a slight blow on the gasket turbo to exhaust. So this showed up as the slightly waving boost line.

Duncan was at pains to explain that just because I had a PPP , on the WRX it only meant that the second cat was deleted and a Prodrive end box , the PPP Sti's apparently had from Prodrive a better flowing cat , the PPP's upgrade price at new however was the same for both. You live and learn  However my poor experience is for others good.

If you are pushing past 300hp forget the Std WRX cat.
a high flow alternative is needed.

There is a whole lot more to the Blouch range than just SC42 / 46

http://www.bptstore.com/Subaru-WRXSTi_c_14-1-1.html

TD05 16/18/20g

then TD05 XT-R which is ball bearing equivalent,

Dominator series is GT30 based im sure,

Bet they could sort a TD06 based one if you got in contact

Pretty sure they SC turbos are just a certain spec 7cm housing etc.

ossett2k2 14 May 2018 11:59 AM

Looks to be disappointing,I would of never thought of a td05 16g to be that laggy despite cats? 1bar @3800rpm and peak 1.4bar @4500rpm.
My bigger sc42 out spools this which I wouldn't expect.
