New Type of eBay Scam Discovered - Be Aware

I have just seen a new (to me) type of scam listing where the scammer
manages to list an item but disables all hyperlinks within the advert
including the ones to e-mail him, check his feedback and even return
to My eBay. If you try to cut and paste the item number most of your
screen turns blue!. One photo features an e-mail address and a BIN
price way below market value. I have reported this by telephone to eBay.

Item # 110191140843

Be careful out there

I don't see any of that?

tonybooth 09 November 2007 06:02 PM

What do you mean? - The whole listing is technically a photo!!

If we're looking at the same item... a caravan - then there's nothing unusual about it for me apart from the fact that he's stuck the buy it now price on the photo?

exvaux 09 November 2007 06:06 PM

all i see is a caravan

tonybooth 09 November 2007 06:07 PM

But can you click on E-Mail the seller or his feedback or even My Ebay at the top of the page?

gazza-uk 09 November 2007 06:08 PM

lets get to the real issue...

WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT CARAVANS :cuckoo:

djuk 09 November 2007 06:08 PM

Yep can click email the seller / check feedback / etc but can't click the my ebay bit.. hmmm :D

tonybooth 09 November 2007 06:09 PM

I have a caravan and have done for years :)

Sonic' 09 November 2007 06:16 PM

Nope, can't click on anything. Except the nice X in the top right to close the page ;) :D

Fuzz 09 November 2007 06:26 PM

More importantly you can't actually bid on it. lol
Not a very good scam then!!

Interesting... 'select all' and you can see there's a big, transparent image covering most of the ad, which is why you can't click on anything. (I'm running Ubuntu Linux / Firefox, YMMV).

Looks more like a bug than anything malicious, though.

Kuohu 09 November 2007 07:23 PM

Well spotted. If you select all and then use Adblock in Firefox to block the image, then you can select and click on things on the page.

Very strange.

these caravaners, eh...:Whatever_

gallois 09 November 2007 07:48 PM

it's for me ma

Jamie 09 November 2007 07:59 PM

Do ya liek dags!

pimmo2000 09 November 2007 08:10 PM

Its some sort of script gone wrong I think !

I dont think its a scam...

tonybooth 09 November 2007 10:14 PM

I am actually quite concerned at the comments of those who cannot see it is a scam.

The 'only' way one could contact the seller is via the e-mail address on one of the photographs. This is suspicious.

The Buy it Now price is only given on the photograph and this is 50% lower than the market value of the item offered.

The seller has only ever used his account as a buyer.

When you put it all together it can't be anything other than a scam

what would scooby do 09 November 2007 10:20 PM

as above adblock fixes it, seems like a bug to me.. good job I don't want a caravan

Snazy 09 November 2007 10:25 PM

Strange though..
When you go to his user ID in community, click a few links like view items, when you go back to the listing, they show as visited links.

debbiesonic 09 November 2007 10:30 PM

As above... Why would i want a caravan with no wheels.

It is a bit strange that one though.

Currently Caravans are one of ebays biggest scam items.

There are always some listed way under market price for BIN by people with very little feedback and using libary pictures or pictures from earlier sales. The BIN price is £4300 with an email addy, list price at a dealer would be around £10k.

Anyone not savvy would, seeing the absolute bargain, emial him direct thinking something was wrong with the page.

Believe it or not there are many caravan forums and the ebay scams have been discussed at great length.

So I've been told. :wonder:

Cheers

Its a bug in eBay that has started to happen in the last couple of days. Its happened to various other ads, and happens in various ways. On my other machine using Firefox I cannot even login to ebay.

Hopefully they will get it fixed. After all, if they don't get it fixed, how will you be able to get the caravan in order to destroy it in some malicious manner. You ARE planning to destroy it right?

Even if he did set it up so that no one can bid.. its hardly a scam.. he just wants private sales. Using ebay as like an advert!

If you asks for your money and your bank details before you see it, then you can worry.:thumb:

Sonic' 10 November 2007 09:07 AM

I still fail to see how this is a scam, I mean a caravan is not something you would post

even with just an email address, you email them arrange to view, then if it floats your boat pay it and drive it away, if payment is requested first then dont reply simple as

Hardly see it being a scam tbh

tonybooth 10 November 2007 10:14 AM

If you e-mailed there would be no opportunity to view - Just a request for payment / bank details.

As I said you could not buy the caravan for that price anywhere.

T

Fuzz 10 November 2007 10:56 AM

Then you deserve to get scammed if you buy something of that worth without actually going to look at it first..

chris1scouser 10 November 2007 11:13 AM

fleabey

there are lots of rip off merchants on ebay, i've been ripped off severely once £2850, item listed for a friend. another time the item was not as described/damaged, emailed the seller oh! i didn't see it when i packaged it! if you buy something of ebay more often than not you are subject to sold as seen rule. there is little you can do to retrieve your hard earned. go and see the item before bidding. only when you see something you can put your own value to it.

pimmo2000 10 November 2007 11:27 AM

Hes blocked his contact too.. if you email him and agree to buy via email, lets be honest your an idiot !
