for my daughters first laptop she is 12 and will be using it for school work etc, no gaming though

How much memory does it come with? As it comes with Vista you should be looking at 1GB minimum.
At the end of the day at that price its real entry level.

If the laptop is only going to be used for school work then the spec is fine.

£299 also seems a reasonable price
