Whats the truth about piston slap ???

Hi all, I have posted this before but im still worrid about it...
I have a MY98 with a mild dose of piston slap. Horrible slight knocking noise when cold and goes after about 5 minutes...
I brought the car in the summer and it did not do it but now the cold mornings are here it is apparent..
I have done alot of research about it but not really found alot out.
Does anybody have any good advice as its worrying me now.

Many thanks

It was very common on MY97-MY98 cars if memory serves me right.
From speaking to people it never caused any problems.
Just an anoying trait with cars of this age.
So from what I have heard not too much to worry about - you are not alone.

I would be interested to see other comments on this.

if it goes when engine warm nothing to worry about at all

i have a very very slight slap on my wrx (2002) it will last for about 10 mins till the pistons get warmed up then it goes away.
The fact that it goes away means its not really a problem, if you still get it after say 20-30mins then i would say you have a problem.

Ive got it on my MY98 wagon, goes after 5mins and is fine, cars just clicked over 100k and doesnt use any oil.

Had it on my old MY98. Went after 5mins or so. Nothing to worry about in my mind.

As above, it's an annoyance, nothing more, unless the car starts using more oil than petrol! ;)
