Fitting Z32 maf to '96 classic ?

I've just bought a Z32 maf off ebay complete with the wiring and plug.

Can anyone tell me how to wire it up to a '96 wrx ?

Jolly Green Monster 26 October 2007 11:43 PM

Z32 connector has 6 pins labelled A to F:
A - Not connected
B - MAF Output Signal
C - Gnd
D - Gnd
E - +12V
F - Not connected

Subaru 92-96 MAF Connector has 5 pins:
1 - +12V
2 - Gnd
3 - Sensor Gnd
4 - MAF Signal
5 - Not connected

just make sure you keep the gnds separate.. if the gnds in the wiring loom are connected the powerfc won't power up.. check immobiliser anyone :)

how do u know which ground is which on the Z32 maf?

Jolly Green Monster 26 October 2007 11:58 PM

doesn't matter..

340BHP-WRX 27 October 2007 10:12 AM

Can I just cut the plug off the original maf connector and join the wires up accordingly to the plug that comes with the z32 ?

WRXshaneWRX 27 October 2007 11:37 AM

pos 3 on the power fc aswell ;)

Jolly Green Monster 27 October 2007 11:49 AM

personnaly I prefer to leave the original plug on and solder into the loom so you can switch between them if you ever need to refit original maf.. but yes you could just cut it off and solder the new one on

slipstream_uk 27 October 2007 12:08 PM

Is this a simple mod to do or is there anything else thats needed to be done, like the ecu side. And why use a nissan maf, is it better or just down to cost

MartynJ 27 October 2007 03:24 PM

The Z32 maf will support a higher power output than the standard unit...You will need either a remap ala ESL or similar (Simon can sort you out there) or an Apexi Power FC....

what a maf ??????????????????

By "leave the original plug on and solder into the loom" do you mean that I will have 2 plugs then. The original one and the plug for the Z32 ?

RAPID RABBIT 27 October 2007 07:02 PM

has anyone fitted the orange maf with only one earth?
what do you do with the left over earth from loom?

yes.. then you can continue using the car on the original.. switch within 2minutes to map it etc.. and then if you sell the car and want to return it to standard it is an easy plug and play..

the apexi induction kit is very good price and works well..

but to just replace the filter you would be best speaking with K&N I guess.

sti4 I believe is

I believe is wired in yellow (12v), black/green(GND) and green is signal.. or
it is the version with red (12v), black (gnd) and white (signal)..

haven't found the q45 maf wiring yet though :)

AndrewC 30 October 2007 11:11 AM

Q45 MAF only has 3 pins, B, D & E same pin assignment as Z32:
B - MAF Output Signal
D - Gnd
E - +12V

STi4 connector is also 3 pins:
1 - MAF Signal (Colour can vary)
2 - Gnd (Black/Green)
3 - +12v (Green)

Jolly Green Monster 30 October 2007 11:15 AM

see told you he was the wiring master ;)

AndrewC 30 October 2007 01:20 PM

I meant to ask: why would you want to fit a Q45 MAF to an STi4 ?

Andrew...

just to make sure i have this right then,i got hold of a z32 maf and a old green label subaru maf and took the end off the subaru maf and have soldered it on to the z32 maf wiring plug so that i can swop between the two if i had to and means i keep the wiring loom on the car un-touched,as pic below
Attachment 49769
Attachment 49770
so i have connected it as so
b on the z32 maf to pin number 4 on the subaru one(this wire is shielded)
c on the z32 maf to pin number 3 on the subaru one(this wire is shielded)
d on the z32 maf to pin number 2 on the subaru one
e on the z32 maf to pin number 1 on the subaru one

Had a chat with my teccy today re this...Every STi4 maf we have modded to fit an early classic has been wired with the earths joined all with no issues..Probably haven't done as many as yourself but haven't found one yet that wouldn't run when wired this way....
