Anybody else get this.
Ever since I got the car - when putting handbrake on while on a slope (even slight). The car moves slightly (couple of inches) backwards or forwards when I take my foot off the brake. Puts the sh*ts up people who have come up too close at the traffic lights. Any easy cure or do " they all do that sir" Alasdair |
Apparently the handbrake works on some type of cam system. This changes form an upslope to a down slope. Clear as mud eh?
Well if you put the handbrake on on an upslope the cam rotates to the upslope position (which may mean the car rolls back a couple of inches). If the next application is on an upslope cam is already in position so no roll. When next application on down slope occurs cam is out of position so roll forward occurs and so on. Well that is the way it was explained to me. Oh and apparently handbrake turns aren't a good idea as the handbrake doesn't use the rear disc system but shoes on the inside of the disc (beside the wheel bearing) |

No offence to whoever told you that but they are talking b077ocks . The handbrake works the same way as one on a car with drum brakes . The roll back or forward is due to movement in the brake linkage and the fact that the shoes are so small and only designed as a parking brake . Derek |

As others have said a small amount of play is OK and is due to the design of the handbrake(see below).If the play is excessive compared to other Imprezas it can be adjusted (see below). :)
Woffle mode on ;) The reason for the movement is because the handbrake uses a self energising design.There are two brake shoes as in a normal drum brake but the design differs in that only one shoe is supported by a post. The other shoe presses against the first by means of a floating adjuster,and when the hand brake is applied the friction causes the first shoe to rotate and push the second shoe out with much more force than with a conventional design. This reduces the effort and makes the handbrake much more powerfull (those Japs are v cunning you know),the downside is that there will always be a small amount of play,however it can be adjusted if necessary. On the drum back plate near the bottom there is a rubber plug under which is the adjuster, an arrow stamped on the backplate shows which direction to turn the adjuster to reduce the play, don't go too mad otherwise the handbrake will drag.Remember there needs to be some play!.
