Its taken many years but looks like Porsche are going to finally be able to buy VW.

Personally, I think a better venture for Porsche would be to invest in some more imaginative exterior designers. ;)

Given their current financial state i think Porsche would pass on your business advice.

Porsche needs fuel efficient cars in its line up to stay in business, so such a move would make excellent sense.

Besides that, I can put a 'Porch' badge on my Passat now :luxhello:

I know it baffles me, they make the best sportscars in the world, have a premum brand and have the highest profit margins on every car sold bar none.

Maybe, Maybe not. Maybe its the Porsche fanboys proping them up thanks to the badge (refer to Cayenne ;) ), or maybe because they've saved a few billion in the exterior design department?

As an ex-Porsche owner myself, I can happily vouch that their current offerings straight of the jelly-mould that is the 997, is dynamically and visually nothing more than a rear engined 928, but without the ground-breaking styling (well, for 1978 it was). It is IMO, shockingly bland both in looks and driving. What happened to old lairy 911s of yore?

Now if the Cayman was modelled on the Carrera GT rather than a boil-washed 997, I wouldn't be here moaning about its lack of anything visually emotive. The watered down driving dymanics, however will still be a sore point. :)

I've a Passat as well - but I think I'll pass at putting a 'Porch' badge on it ... :D

Does this mean that VW will stop sucking like it does now?

Have a look at their options lists to see where the profits are:

Slate grey metallic paint £1560
Choose instrument dial back £300
Wheels painted £700
3 spoke steering wheel £300
Porshe Navigation System £2000 etc etc

So that means tha VWs will get even more expensive and pointless! LOL

NOW- Expensive, crap, unreliable.

FUTURE- Even more expensive, crap, unreliable.

Maybe Porsche will make use of VW's diesel technology.

997 Diesel perhaps?

Our FD has a Porsche Cayenne turbo, he has got his wife a V10 TDI Touareg, he readily admits the VW is a much nicer car, but keeps the Porsche due to the image.

Hang on a minute, thought a Porch was a VW anyway, they still even use VW knobs, switches and things dont they?

So how does this deal tie in with Audi, Skoda and Seat and thw rest of the current VAG group?

I think its unlikely. Porsche upped its stake in VW in March this year to 30.9% which under EU law triggered a takeover bid. Porsche bid the minimum amount it could to shareholders as it had no intention of wanting to take over the company. The move was primarily to prevent hedge fund companies buying the company and breaking it up.

The CEO of Porsche (Wendelin Wiedeking) is a prodigy of the VW Chairman (Ferdinand Piech) so its unlikely while these two are here, much will happen in the way of substantial change.

I don't see Porsche's $8bn tail wagging the VW $200bn dog just yet.

Plus with credit markets in turmoil, I can't see any company raising enough capital to buy VW.

As for the 911 design, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm not a huge fan, but I'm glad the round lights are back and I do like the new cars. The Cayman looks odd and the Cayenne should be binned.

Im with Tart Man, ok the 911 is a looker but the Cayenne though impressive and has presence its and ugly thing, a 911 front stuck on a VW Toerag like something a mad Sheikh would commission. The Boxster I suppose is nice but kind of looks like a bar of soap with wheels, needs a little more drama but I suspect it is deliberately made a bit dowdy so the 911 looks like more of an option when you start speccing a Boxster up.

And the Cayman, what happened with the rear wings, they stick up too far !

ok slim, forget about the insults for the time being, go back in history and tell me about Dr Ferdinand Porsche, elefant, Tiger, The people's car (beetle) and Porsche cars cos i'm sure there's a link in there somewhere. And i'm sure after WW 2 it was the British army that kept VW/Porsche cars afloat and German industry as a whole. Now you all stay calm and just correct me or tell me if i'm wrong. Lets be adult.

I don't recall mentioning hairdressers or Boxters being too slow, now you are off topic. But if it's hairdressers your into there's a loveley boy near me with nice blond streaks that drives a Pug 206cc.

Hopefully that's the last from the special needs trolls and we can get back on topic.
