Nice, looks like a good one, still miss my last one, won from the Daily Mirror in 1988 when I was 17, my dad had it for 14 years, then me, it was my fifth GTI.

More fun than most of the current crop of Hot Hatches.

what would scooby do 23 October 2007 06:54 PM

Yep, definitely a hoot to drive and feels great not having PAS ABS etc etc

CrisPDuk 25 October 2007 06:30 AM

Here we go again:rolleyes:

Yet another thread dedicated to the greatest hot hatch ever:cool: Welcome to the club:thumb:

My old one:

I've still got the Borbets, I've just not got round to putting them on the new one yet:D

Go on then, if you insist :D

NACRO 25 October 2007 12:30 PM

Take the 16v and GTi badges off, stick a 'driver' one on there instead and annoy drivers of low end BMWs and warm hatches by showing them how it's done old skool stylee.

Are you going to tell us how much you paid?

I used one of these as a station car for a while, it was funny as hell leaving all the 'high power' user chooser company diesel drivers for dead when they wanted to do the usual asshole tricks like cutting in from filter lanes by out accelerating all the slow cars........

Small bumper MKII's are the best looking IMO.

Tart Man 25 October 2007 12:43 PM

Sort the spot rust on the sills first though :thumb:

NACRO 25 October 2007 01:13 PM

Rust is part of the charm, did you also know these bumpers are near indestructable compared to painted deformable items you find on modern cars?
The owner of an Audi A4 who parked practically on top of my MKII would be able to tell you that assuming he posts here.

Adidas 26 October 2007 08:35 AM

As CrisP said 'Welcome to the Mk2 Club' :thumb:

mrtheedge2u2 26 October 2007 09:13 AM

Very fine example you had CrisPDuk

CrisPDuk 26 October 2007 10:10 AM

Thanks, the Oak Green one was about as tidy as they come, I sold it when i moved out here:(

I bought the blue one on a whim from a guy of SN, it needs slight attention in the bodywork department but mechanically it's spot on, he'd fitted a few nice bits to it too:thumb:

IT comes with a recommendation too, anyone with a 16V should be investing in a TSR exhaust manifold (and the accompanying HD engine mounts), the transformation in mid range performance is astonishing:cool:

Matteeboy 26 October 2007 10:21 AM

Had one for three years (and my parents had it for 9 years before me) -great cars!
My Mum, Dad and I have owned nine GTis (mk1,2 and 3) over the years!

J4CKO 26 October 2007 12:58 PM

Would love to do a MK2 1.8T, perhaps based on a poverty spec model in doom blue or faded red.

crofty 26 October 2007 01:16 PM

Had a couple of mk2 16v, had an almost mint white small bumper 16v about two years ago and stupidly sold it :brickwall , been trying to find a good one again but it seems almost impossible now, love your oak green one CrisPDuk!

The Chief 26 October 2007 01:41 PM

What do these actually go like? especially with the mid-range boosting TSR manifold as i read that the standard ones suffered a bit mid range wise.

How do they compare with later hot hatches?

They are quick enough standard, they just need revving to perform compared to a 8V car which is half the fun IMO. Obviously more power gained cheaply can only be a good thing but my cars were standard.
Without power steering they have fantastic feel, with they are less of a handful at lower speeds and when there is an emergency but at the cost of some feel. I prefer the power steering equipped cars.

Compared to say a 306GTi my car was a bit slower but not much in it overall. Certainly they are quick enough to annoy drivers of company spec 'high power' diseasals ie 320D or any 2ltr repmobile you can think of. My 16V also returned 40ish mpg on a run.

What's more important about these cars than outright speed is the fact they are an utter joy to drive compared to the mostly adulterated and overweight rubbish we have on offer today.

J4CKO 26 October 2007 04:18 PM

NACRO is spot on, without the power steering the feel is amazing, however girls cant drive them, especially on non standard wheels (which generally arse then handling anyway if too big).

112 BHP goes a long way in a Golf Mk2.

Matteeboy 26 October 2007 04:22 PM

I do remember getting sore arms trying to parallel park mine - SUCH heavy steering!
I didn't like the 16v at first but soon warmed to it.
Just needs thrashing.

CrisP - That is one lovely Golf. Respec'!

My Oak Green one was always a bit wheezy in the mid range, unlike an 8v you couldn't just plant it in what ever gear you were in if you wanted to overtake someone, which was a bit of a PITA in normal driving, but get it on a good road and stir the gears and boy was it fun:D After years of driving 8V GTis and V6 Fords it took me a while to figure that out that some cars can and do rev past 5k:lol1:

The blue one came with uprated suspension, HD engine mounts, a TSR manifold and a jetex system, basically it's just like the green one, only turned up to 11:cool: But just like an 8V you can plant it in any gear for overtaking purposes:thumb:

BTW Jacko's right about the wheels, without question if you want to retain the factory fitted superb ride/handling balance, stick with the original wheel & tyre sizes:thumb:

I didn't with mine solely because a Mk2 just looks so right on 16" Borbets:cool::D

collierm 27 October 2007 04:24 AM

My old 8V, and I loved it. Equal top with the Impreza in the fun stakes and it was damn near unbreakable (apart from the 3 alternators and 2 starter motors).

Keep it standard - then it is a proper classic.
I still miss mine.
I didnt like it so much as some other cars whilst making progress down a B road. The front began to feel a bit too light sometimes.
However I have never had a FWD car overstear in such a sumblime way.
Mine was your age and everything worked - great looks - fantastic build quality - an iconic car THE GTI - a great drive (up there in my A list)
A real classic in every way - its a shamethey dont make themlike that anymore.

rb5_336 27 October 2007 08:34 PM

yes i'll always have a soft spot for mk2's, especially 16v's.

Getting the timing spot on was the biggest thing with mine (above), wish I had checked/adjusted it earlier!

Nice and easy to work on too..

Sean

turbogav 27 October 2007 09:48 PM

Agree MK 2's are great cars. Never really found the 16V quick enough though so moved onto a Rallye with about 200bhp - lovely car, still miss it even today

^^ I'd heard that "standard" Rallyes are slow, slow, slow? Shame as they look great!

It's still in good hands Sean:thumb:

Unfortunately being out of the country means I'm not getting to use it much at the moment:( But MrsD is definitely getting my money's worth:lol1:

what would scooby do 29 October 2007 11:06 PM

Yeah, nice cars. Mines going to be kept 100% standard.

p.s. it's not rust on the sills - just mud..

CrisPDuk 30 October 2007 03:16 AM

Trust me WWSD, don't go for 100% standard, you need to get a decent stereo fitted, the factory Blaupunkt ones were sh!te of the first order;)

Apart from that there's nothing that actually needs changing about them anyway:thumb:

J4CKO 30 October 2007 01:39 PM

Yep, ours had a Panasonic stereo from new, truly dire.

Standard is fine but with Golfs, people get carried away, they replace tired saggy suspension with highly uprated stuff, thinking that standard = soft, so they end up with ace springs, dropped 60 mm making it horrible to drive, so I say either go for new or slightly uprated and matched sets from a reputable manufacturer, lower isnt/rarely always faster.
