twin td04 turbo set up (would this work ?)

Im currently building a project escort for the track as you might of seen on here,it has a my98 impreza engine in the back, now im definatly planning on raising the power of it but i fancy doing some thing a little different plus i dont want to spend to much on it as its only a track toy so i was toying with the idea of building a twin turbo set up using td04 turbos, ive got plenty of room behind the engine to fabricate a twin up pipe, do you think this would work with suitable supporting mods?

Supercharge it instead?
There was a twin turbo 2 litre Legacy too which might help you?

I don't have much idea when it comes to things like this, but i would say it'll depend how you intend fitting and plumbing them, you could put one turbo on each side of the engine, ie, 2 cylinders per turbo, but i suspect you'll struggle to get enough exhaust speed/volume to get the right boost....... but like i say, what do i know???

rentonone 15 October 2007 10:00 PM

yeah the legacy uses a turbo on each side but i was thinking of running two turbos off the same side with a custom up pipe that splits into two, its prob a stupid idea i was just wondering how much power two td04's would make but as you say it might not produce enough spool, i thought td04's as they spool up quick plus you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Subaru did not continue with the twin turbo production which must say something?

rigga 15 October 2007 10:56 PM

If you did decide to go this route..... how about a difference in size on turbo's,small one for low spool up and a bigger one for the top end? ..... dont some skylines come with sequential set ups like this?

Mocom Racing 16 October 2007 09:08 AM

Forget sequential setups, staging them both is too difficult to get right and IMHO wouldn't see much gain over a well specced twin set-up.

I've seen a few twin turbo set-ups in Scandinavia that looked quite good.

how do you think two td04's would perform attached to legacy headers?
or would there not be enough gases to spool them up?

Cheers mate, how does it perform and what it the spec.
very interested.

makes 245kw at the wheels, so around 450bhp
no noiceable lag, but also has a jdm 6 speed. The car was built by Prova in Japan for the Tokyo autosalon in 2003 and 2004, now lives in my garage in New Zealand :)

on the exhaust, each bank of cylinders feeds a turbo, there is no cross over pipe.
each turbo draws through the standard gtb TT intake fed by some other niceties.

so are they just standard td04's?

Optical 05 November 2007 07:28 AM

yes, as far as i know :)

rentonone 05 November 2007 05:38 PM

Hhmmm, I think i am going to look more into this then, how would i plumb the 2 turbos in? ie, could i just use the one boost solonoid and tee it to the two actuators etc.

Optical 10 November 2007 04:45 AM

yes, that's how this one is hooked up

thanks mate, i dont suppose you have any pics of the headers and up pipe? im looking for as much info as posible so the more pics the better.

James

Optical 11 November 2007 07:40 AM

hmm, sorry no pics presently, but might have some in the next couple of weeks as im dropping a new shortblock in.

each head has a pipe running from each exhaust output up to where the turbo sits, the two pipes merge just before the turbo flange.

Theoretically not the ideal exhaust pairing, but they seem to work fine..

Is this the same sort of set up, ive just found this off the net.

Optical 11 November 2007 09:22 AM

Yeah that's basically it.
