MY00 Projector Retrofit Project

Car: Impreza Turbo MY00
Std Headlights = CRAP!
Solution= ?????

Well, I was really close in ordering a after market HID kit..... however after doing a bit of digging on the web - just found too many people wishing they never bothered.

The solution was to retrofit some projectors (aka XENONS) into the standard housing - :)

1st thing was 1st - got the wiring harness made up from a diagram off HIDPLANET :thumb:

Hard bit....

Removed headlights

Gonna do an alignment test on the weekend (fingers crossed its dry) more pix to follow once both are in....

Update 1.....

Ok done a quick alignment test yesterday, all looks good - it just needs slight work with the trusty Dremel (on the donor headlight ;) - Supplied by nash_WRX :thumb:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSC00380.jpg

This is the best pic I could get (it doesnt do projectors justice) as it was in the afternoon facing the bay area of my house. However the cut off is amazing :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSC00381.jpg

Better night shots to follow.....

Update 2....

Ok, things are going well. However I've just come across these babies
http://www.retro-solutions.com/Premi...files/0005.JPG

Not sure what to do -

Will they look good sitting just in front of my Projectors (or a bit Chav?)

????

Decided not to go for the CCFL's

Update 3....

All sanded and ready for primer

How to guide to follow....

Good work!

When you fit them back on make sure you post up pics of how they look on the car.

Ill be interested to hear about your findings, no doubt these will give you much better visability over standard.

Why, what did they feel, was wrong with them? Was just thinking of ordering a set myself :wonder:

Mate, have a look on NASIOC.COM and HIDPLANET.COM - some great articles about aftermarket HID kits. Most of the issues I came across were regarding the beam pattern they gave off. Video Features | Videos | Auto Express

At the end of the day everyone to their own right :)

I've been trying to decide what to do with my headlights for ages...you may hav ejust swayed me; these are going to work well and look cool :thumb:

bloody hell i bet they weren't cheap!

darms 24 October 2007 11:22 AM

Well.....lets just say I owe a mate of mine who works at a body shop big time...... :thumb:

I may be able to offer a retro fitting service to SN members (fingers crossed) - just waiting on another contact at BMW to come through with a set on shouds (the rim that has Xenon written on them) :)

Then I'll see if he wants to do business on a regular basis with E46 Projectors and shouds.

I'll try and get my how to... posted soon......

Its all about the little finishing touches.......

if the price is right I may very well be interested...but will probably end up doing it myself :brickwall

lol, its all about being anal :Whatever_:D

darms 24 October 2007 11:44 AM

Yeah no worries mate........

Here if you have any questions :thumb:

If you want to practice on a head lamp first (like I did) give me a shout as I purchased a pair of Pre Face lift headlamps from a fellow SN Member - only chopped one up then attacked my Crystals! :)

top man...lots to do before I start fiddling with the lights but I'll PM you when I start

vindaloo 24 October 2007 12:12 PM

Is it just the pic or is that projector lens HUGE. I've seen piccies of retros before where the projector lens seems lost in the middle of the standard headlight.

Good job!

J.

darms 24 October 2007 12:18 PM

yeap - its a 3" lens! :)

Initially I was gonna do the retro fit with a set of Mini Projectors as they came my way, but thank god a week later my mate called to say he had some Jag Bi-Xenons! :thumb:

Getting a Shoud to fit is proving a bit of a challenge.......

SC008Y_MAD 24 October 2007 05:57 PM

Im going back to stock halogens, but 50% brigher GE ones.

Well done for doing this and getting this far, I am sure usual folk would of given up at the 'removing the headlight stage'.

Might be intrested if you where to do this as an on the side business.

darms 25 October 2007 07:57 AM

No probs mate will do :thumb:

SC008Y_MAD 26 October 2007 06:01 PM

I got a question... Do these kits have balasts and relays etc like the aftermarket kits do?

Say if a bulb goes, you would I guess go back to the maker of the projector, in this case, Jag. What about using Subaru projectors from the new scoobs?

Have you got a pic of the lamp installed to see what it looks like from above?

darms 26 October 2007 07:35 PM

Mate

They are not what you'd call Kits as such. They have a pair of ballasts and the projector lamps - relays and the other wiring stuff was purchased from Maplins :)

This is the bulb mine uses... Osram Xenarc D1S 35W :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSC00450.jpg
If they ever go, I can simply replace them from any half decent bulb reseller.

Just finished doing another aiming test today..... Just ignore the crap outside my house :wonder:

Nice cut off or what? (both taken during alignment testing)

Standard electronic adjusters are working fine too :)

SC008Y_MAD 26 October 2007 07:40 PM

Cool. Thats propper cool. :thumb:

darms 26 October 2007 07:52 PM

Cheers mate

However I'm still waiting on the shouds from BMW. Also something to use as a bezel. Managed to cover the sides with a home made cover.

Ring made
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...t/DSC00437.jpg

Better! :)

SC008Y_MAD 26 October 2007 08:04 PM

All I can say is well done.

finalzero 26 October 2007 10:29 PM

How much were the project parts? I am thinking about doing this at some point when I pick up my new car (2000 classic).

darms 26 October 2007 11:35 PM

They were FREE :) - my mate works at a body shop! I just had to make a wiring harness.

I was lucky they were Bi-Xenons so I still get my High/Low beams :thumb:

Best of luck, well worth it..............

SC008Y_MAD 05 November 2007 07:23 PM

Hows this comming along. Have you got the bits from BMW yet?
