from cold, if you check it when youve turned over the engine its pumped some oil around the engine and you wont get the true reading

just reading a thread on search and they say its sumtimes better to check when hot as oil expands.

Leave oil to settle for a few hours, preferably overnight to allow the oil to settle back to the sump.

There are 2 marks on the dipstick. The hole shows full when cold and the higher notch shows maximum when hot.

Best to check when cold, although if yours is anything like mine, I get totally different readings on either side of the dipstick!

Check it first thing in the morning after a night of it standing for best results.
