PPg or 6 Speed.

Is there much difference in price? Thats to go on a 1995 classic? With approx 430 bhp.
Cheers guys

Yes.

PPG = approx £3k + donor box
6 Speeds are around half that

DaveR5gtt 07 October 2007 10:01 PM

No way didnt realise there was that much difference ideal cheers Bob.

Lateral Performance 09 October 2007 12:52 AM

That assumes you get everything you need for a 6 speed conversion for £1500, and don't mind adding a shed load of weight, and having short gearing !

Ive just gone for ppg kit rather than six speed. I hate the short ratios 1to 4 so spent a bit more and got what I wanted and Im sure in the long run its going to stronger than a 6 speeder. Speak to Mark at Lateral, he gave me some good advice on which way to go.

What price did you get them for as I'm in same boat as you?

The Chief 09 October 2007 01:10 PM

What ratios do the PPG have i.e. speeds in gears compared to the 6 speeder?:wonder:

Jay m A 09 October 2007 02:02 PM

They're quite long, not dissimilar to a UK 5 speed - its best to get a UK 5th if the box doesn't have one already

swisstonihasher 09 October 2007 05:01 PM

Not sure 5 speed PPG kit will be stronger in long run than 6 speed as latter has stronger case, bigger shafts and an oil pump I believe - although I know 6 speed syncros can be a little weak. Could be wrong mind...

DaveR5gtt 09 October 2007 05:22 PM

Shed loads off weight is the last thing i want PPG it is then!!! Sorted.

Matt_Davies 09 October 2007 05:42 PM

Anyone know the ACTUAL weight difference (circa at least) between these two boxes ? A ppg really doesnt appeal to me. Seems like hard work and i'm really not running enough power to kill a 6spd.

So unless its a substantial difference . . . I couldnt really justify the cost.

911 09 October 2007 06:05 PM

I think you will find it to be 30 to 35 Kg, or half a person equivellent.

Today I drove on a sprint track a UK turbo with a helical/synchro ppg, and what a nice box it was too. The whine from the gears was almost zero, and the change as sweet as a nut. It could have been a stock UK box.

I am sure you would find the short 1 to 4 gears of the 6 speeder a pain.

That weight gain is huge for a competition car to tolerate, but for a road car, the 6 speeder could work well I feel.
My Sti V3 is a race car, so a ppg is the only way forward.

DaveR5gtt 09 October 2007 07:17 PM

Well my car is gonna be for drag racing etc so ppg deff seems the way for me.
Don't spose you know the weight of a standard fly wheel roughly do you?
No real reason just wanted to know?

stockcar 09 October 2007 07:23 PM

std 5speed one is around 11.5kgs...............

Cheers dude nice one.

After swapping from an RA 5 speed to a jdm 6 speed in my00 I always tell people to buy the PPg as the 6 speed made my car slower :(

Andy.F 09 October 2007 08:20 PM

I binned the 6 speed from my Spec C and fitted a PPG 5 sp.

My race car still uses a 5sp casing, they're quite strong really :)

Ahh thats neither here nor there . . . :D Its only a quick - ish road car.

I'm not looking to set any land speed records im afraid.

Why is the short ratios 1-4 considered such a problem . . Its an extra change on the strip but in a fast road car ?? Does'nt the shorter ratios help it along abit also??

Apologies if im stealing the thread here :thumb:

911 09 October 2007 09:11 PM

That is why i say for a road car the 6 speeder is quite nice, esp the ones i have driven (one a Litchfield Spec C) great on the road imho, BUT an extra change when getting going seriously is a major hinderence, and i would take note of AndyF's comments.

Aztec Performance Ltd 09 October 2007 09:17 PM

its only 2-3% weight increase on the car, which in a road car would probably never be noticed.

PAR/PPG ratios are good for the strip though :D

martyp1 09 October 2007 09:23 PM

Ive got a 6 speed uk in my car ,around 550bhp ,love it on the road ,i use the car on the 1/4 ,only problem i have found is 1st gear is a bit short but the rest seem o.k.
With the 6 speed you may have an extra gear change but if the ratios are shorter then surely a 6 speed should accelerate faster ?

Matt_Davies 09 October 2007 09:23 PM

Cheers Graham, Ahh its all money though hey :D

What are your 1/4 mile times/speeds Marty ?

My criticism of the 6sp is that once you have increased power the close ratios mean you seem to spend as much time changing gear as you spend in-gear.

i have opted for the ppg 5 speed on my 2.35 build

matt

3K for a nice ppg v 1.8K for a 6 speeder and 30Kg odd extra.

As said not really a prob on a road car (how heavy is a tank of fuel, I barely notice a performance drop from full to empty on the road), but in a race car that weight is a real issue, and so is multiple gearchanging, you leave time everywhere that you can't make up later esp on speed events that are so short to begin with.

For a road car the 6 speeder is a good option imho and solid too. You may have to change the rear diff of course, but that is just a bit of hard work.

Hi Andy ,have not done much 1/4 mile running ,only had 4 runs, best time was 12.2 at 119mph,60ft was 1.95 ,that was on road tyres ,although i did have a misfire ,found out it was the spark plugs .
Getting some toyo 888 on before i run next.Since i got back i keep thinking about stripping the car to save weight :norty:
Spare wheel out ,jack ,seats ,carpet, etc. How far do you go
Only started out as a bit of fun
Cheers

Personally I love my UK six speed on my classic.
I'm about to throw a 550bhp 2.5 at it (all done bar the mapping). With 2 litres and 350bhp I loved it and it made the car for me. It will be interesting to see what its like with more power, torque and a differently revving engine.

However its only ever going to be a road car with the odd quarter mile and track days so the extra weight is not really a concern.

Time will tell.

Daz

simbo 10 October 2007 07:00 PM

so for a 500 ish hp road car the 6 speed is a good option ?

dazdavies 10 October 2007 07:17 PM

I'll tell you when its mapped lol.
