One of Leslie's old rides - Vulcan

Driving through Norwich I spotted a sign for the Aircraft museum, so I popped in and found a Vulcan, the only one in the country you can visit the cock pit, or so they said, nice and cosy inside Leslie, so where did you sit :)

Leslie

Did they come with those grab handles or did you have to swipe them off of a tube train ??

MikeCardiff 03 October 2007 11:34 AM

Thats probably one of the ones my father was involved in saving - he used to work with them a lot, and at the base where they were scrapping them. Turns out the RAF had planned to scrap ALL of them, and not even keep one for airshows.

Still have happy memories of being a kid and playing in the scrapped aircraft place on the base - sliding down the wings of vulcans and stuff.

The cockpit looks pretty uninviting! And visibility for landing cant have been tjhat good either!

Impressive piece of kit none the less!

Leslie 03 October 2007 07:05 PM

Top left seat Funkii, inless I was doing a check flight on someone and then I would be top right.

Yes those grab handles were helpful for getting up that ladder with all the kit on!

Once you were sitting in the seat it was quite comfortable, needed to be for 5 hour + trips. The screen was a bit narrow but was ok for most things, did not stop us flying at very low level when necessary, especially when you were being chased by a fighter along the mountain passes. :)

The landing visibility was fine but you did have to keep moving your head around to check for other aircraft near you.

Couldn't see the tail number on that one Funkii, do you remember it?

You must have been at St Athan Mike Cardiff!

Les :)

Les - yep, he was at St Athan twice, with a nice sunbathing / fishing holiday on Ascension inbetween - he's retired now, but St Athan was his last posting - we still live just a few miles away ( not together, but both have houses in the same village ! ).

Looks like St Athan is being turned into the big MOD training base now, which is good news as there hasnt been much going on there recently.

Still have good memories from my childhood of going to a lot of the do's they had there, open days, cricket matches etc....

Leslie 04 October 2007 03:11 PM

Thanks for that Astraboy, I was always wondering where XM 612 wound up. It was one of my favourite display aircraft because it handled very well. They all handled slightly differently because they were effectively hand built and some were better than others.

I have got a pic of me taking off at Nellis AFB near Las Vegas for a display about to go into a steep climb in front of the "Sunrise Mountains" The photographer took it a few seconds too early to get the full effect.

If I can find out how to do it I will upload it.

Yes I bet you had a great time at St Athan Mike.

We've got XL318 up the road at Hendon RAF museum, squeezed into a corner of the museum, very difficult to get any decent photo's as they have the nose stuck in the corner of the building, they cocked up there IMHO, should have been a main attraction rather than stuffed in the corner, it also seems a much larger aircraft when it's indoors compared to walking around the one at Norwich.
