Hi all

I have a My99 and have had aftermarket zaust made for me, minus middle cat, soon to have front cat removed, somene hinted that i may be seeing 250 ish Bhp when thats done? not sure ill have it tested some time.

BUT what i want to know is how come some My99 are showing highter than stated BHP if i look on the dyno section there ae some un moded MY99 giving 230-239 etc, thats a better figure than the 220 i read that they should have.

Is it normal for My99 to do this?

Also whats the dif erence in the My99 and wrx My99.

I think i read on here something about My99 having similar bits to a wrx internaly (long time ago so may be mistaken)

Any help on this would be great, as im slowly planing my tunning, and would love as much info as posible to get it right forst time (as close to 280bhp would be a nice bench mark to aim for)

Thnx very much

top :(

Ellis4779 10 January 2002 10:13 AM

i had a full decat and induction kit.. 255bhp and 245lb of torque..

catflap 10 January 2002 02:09 PM

Thnx

Not bad figures for my99 with full de-cat and induction, i suspect it would not be that difficult to see a uk 99 with 280ish bhp, and importantly for not that much cash (else we would have bought an sti to begin with lol)

Are uk 99`s particularly good or difficult to tune? ive seen some stuff about there not being able to upgrade the ecu? (think its PowerStation, apologies if im wrong here)

It`s probably Power Engineering you are refering to. I enquired on many occasions regarding my 99MY but the revised ECU in this version could not be "tampered with" by means of their usual method. PPP, Link, Motec etc is the way to go with these.
My 99MY - UK produced 242bhp and 230lb/ft with only the back box changed and only 5000mls. on the clock on Powers rollers.

Thats not bad at all 242 :)

Its hard deciding weather to go that rout, as it will inevitably end in adding breaks, suspension and a hole load of bits that would add the price equivalent of getting an sti or evo 6?

Is it worth it, im bitten by the bug, and want more more more, but my head tells me its wasted cash, or should i say ALOT of cash for little result.

I have put a Magnex/Falkland downpipe, PPP, ITG panel and a Dawes with enlarged bleed on mine running 18PSI at 2400rpm-5300rpm dropping to 13.5PSI by 6500rpm. A standard car runs about 13-14 PSI from 3000-5000rpm and is easily in single figures by 6500rpm. On the road to me it feels quicker than an unmodded P1 and before the Dawes I could *just* edge away from one on the road but he had me on corners - party my driving style. I reckon it would show 280bhp @ PE. Hopefully getting towards 260bhp at Star or PS. Going to Star in a week.

Shows the difference that an MBC can make - look at the area separating the power curves in each gear. Single peak figures do not tell the whole story.

...as Cosie Convert shared this thread with me http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthr...&highlight=mbc

At PE Bash Nazir with a MY99 got 270bhp/269lbft with PPP and Falkland's old downpipe, but this is a best of breed result.

But look at the area under the torque or power curves when you are comparing cars. A car with the same slightly less peak power but substantially more torque should pull away in typical road driving.

All seems very good.

xcept the part about the ppp, i already got a back box on my car, and don’t wana pay 17000 notes just for an ecu and some pipes?

I think ill look at link some day, but it all gets expensive from then on.
Anyone know what sort of gains you’d get with full decat, including down pipe, daws and kn induction. Basically the above minus the whopping 1700 ppp?

Thnx for the info

I think it would be quicker than a catted PPP car and possibly a decat one as well. Depends on what boost you run.

If you wanted to chance your engine to a FCD and fitted a Dawes and ran 18PSI you would be quicker, but there are clear safety implications unless you use MAP signal compression rather than removal of fuel cut.

catflap 12 January 2002 03:06 PM

yeh, safety first, cant afford a eng rebuild.

But keeping the existing ecu, and only upping the boost a fraction (within normal ecu cut off limits) this would be safe enough??? as technically we are running a level of boost, that is fine for normal operation????? i am far off the mark here?

my point being. as we are all on a budget (well i am) i want the most from my car at the least expense, but i dont want to compromise on safty. If the daws is a good option, value for money, and is considered to be save (providing boost does not exceed ecu cut off) then ill go for it.

I want to make a trip to japan this year, costing 1500, lol same price almost as a ppp.

Vs the daws is it worth it?

john banks 12 January 2002 04:57 PM

Trouble is how you measure the boost - ie where in the rev range. The highest figures are achieved in the midrange and that is what everyone talks about, but outside the midrange I am effectively running with a closed wastegate and in my opinion it is safe. I personally believe you are safe to run at 1 PSI less than your fuel cut in the midrange on a MY99/00 - so non PPP that is 16 PSI, PPP is 18 PSI. Outside the midrange I don't think the turbo flows enough to get you into trouble. Today I checked a MY00 with only a full exhaust system and it was at 10 PSI at 6500rpm in 2nd. On my car I only run about 3 more than that and the turbo will not flow any more. Gives a useful boost in power.

Rolling raods are not an exact science and many assumptions are made in the clculation they give for power at the crank. Most rolling roads differ (sometimes greatly) and no one car will hw the same results on different rollers.

What is generally believed is that a standard MYXX will produce 10-15bhp more than the manufacturers quoted figures whilst import WRX/STI cars (pre MY01) will be down a little on UK fuel. I think most MYXX's will produce around 225-230bhp whilst a standard 276bhp rated WRX/STI will give 260-270.

Exhaust mods to either car will only raise power at the top end, but they will allow the turbo to spool up much quicker which gives the impression that the car is more powerfull accross a wider rev range. A full catless exhaust will probaly only give you 10bhp and make lttle difference to torque, but the car will "feel" 20bhp and 20/lbs quicker.

Feel free to correct me if I am taliking 5hit.

Edited because I cannot spell.

Most rooling roads differ. My MY99 gave 249bhp/231lbs on one roller and only 222bhp/215lbs on another. Same mods, fuel and weather conditions at both sites. Rolling road readouts are only good/accurate(ish) for comparisson between cars run at the same site on the same day.

Edidted because I still cannot spell.
