Backup advice
Need some advice.
If a company has nearly 70Gigs of data to be backed up what would be the best way of doing this? Currently we use an online backup service but its costing nearly £400 a month. We have Raid 5 fitted on both servers. Any suggestions? Ta;) |
We currently back up approx 100gigs on a tape drive over night
|
As above, stick it on LTO and send it offsite.
Or, . . .Iron Mountain United Kingdom - Data Protection & Recovery - LiveVault Server Backup & Recovery /blatent plug |
I was told tape was a no no as they are not very realiable?

We have 10 tapes to enable 2 weeks backups (mon-fri) then reuse, so we've always got at least a 2 week time frame to restore. As above keep them off site in case of fire etc. |
We have a fair few million tapes of various varieties here and the only ones with any problems are Memorex 9-tracks from the 70's and early 80's ;) As long as its good media and, more importantly, stored in the correct environment it will last a long time.

Yeah we really after something which doesn't involve tapes as it means we are relying on someone to do it!
Looks like our current system is for us as it needs next to no management. |
Remove tape in morning, insert next tape. Doesnt really involve a great deal of managing.

Maybe not to you but we are still relying on someone to do it and its not worked well in the past when we have had to use tapes. Plus our company seems to be full of idoits. Thanks for the info anyway. |
