Headline in todays newspaper [The Mail I think] states Gatsos to be doubled so the police force can generate more revenue.
I'm gonna take my son for a blast this weekend. By the time he's old enough to drive, a computer will be doing it for him!

Rebecca 08 December 2000 03:52 PM

Bajie,

by the time he's old enough to drive .. he won't be doing the driving at all ... it'll all be done for him.

Also there is already a car being tested that automatically slows down to the relevant speed limits ... so having a decent car will be superfluous.

sunilp 08 December 2000 05:24 PM

I quite like the idea of a chauffeur(ess?)

Sad but true.

I don't know if this is available elsewhere on this board. Is a verbatim copy from the ABD news letter:

The Future is Black.
If you think Labour isn't committed to taxing drivers off the road, here's a summary of what they have planned for us. You might find this useful next May when you can't decide whether or not to give Tony your vote...

1) 2000: Proposals to make speeding a £1000 offence and raise other motoring penalties are to be decided soon. Spread M25-style zero tolerance, variable speed cameras to other motorways from 2002-3.

2)2001: Graduated Vehoicle Excise Duty (road tax) on new cars starting in March. Based on exhaust emmissions, it will look harmless at first but from 2002 on GVED will double or quadruple from todays £100-£155 to £350-£450 on upper mid range cars and soar to £900 - £1000 per year on executive cars, warn Whitehall insiders.

3) 2002-4: Company car emissions related benefit tax begins in 2002. Its ratchet-up mechanism in 2003 and 2004 will hit cars registered this year. About half of the nations 2.4 million company car drivers are set to receive soaring benefit-in-kind tax bills. Some will rocket from £6000 now to £14000 by 2004.

4)2002-3: Road pricing tolls of £5 or £7.50 (lorries £15) to enter town and city centres starting in London in 2003 or 2002 if Mayor Ken Livingston has his way. John Prescott is now "de-trunking" about a third of English A-roads so local authorities can toll as they please- up to 5p/mile is possible.

5) 2002-3: The £5 gallon, near £4 of it tax, is expected if it has notarrived sooner. Labour has stopped the fuel duty escalator introduced by the Conservatives but has not yet stopped excalating fuel taxation at above inflation.

6) 2003-6: Workplace parking leview of £2000 a year whereever town councils wish - 24 councils are interested. It is planned to start in 2003 and be increased in 2006 from £8 per working day to £10 , raising the annual levy to £2500, say experts.

7)2003-6: Parking meter and off- road parking charges rasied in 2003 and again in 2006 to deter workplace parking dodgers and in town driving. There are ideas also to levy off road parking charges.

8)2003-6: Motorway electronic speed cameras set at or near zero tolerance on all motorways, automatically endorsing drivers' licences at the DVLA and fining offenders up to £1000 a time. Some motorway cameras could appear in 2002 following Nottingham trials.

9)2006-2010: Motorway tolls of six pence per mile, meaning a £12 tax for a London-Birmingham round trip in return for a possible seven pence per litre cut or no rise in fuel duty.

Ends.

Mick 09 December 2000 06:37 PM

Obvious outcome of more cameras and less coppers is a vast increase in unreadable / false number plates !

Mick

Spence27 09 December 2000 06:47 PM

Not being funny, but if zero-tolerance cameras are going to be fitted to most major motorways and will 'do' you for doing 78 at 2:00am with no other cars in sight I'm gonna f**ing move country

Vote for ME and I will:-

1 Abolish Gold Wheels and make all such tack illegal http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

2 Make baseball caps illegal and execute those who don't know which way round they are supposed to go - and burn their Novas!!

3 Ensure that every car not capable of 0-62 in less than 8 seconds is taxed at double that of cars going faster

4 Put the grannies and granddads on a simulator to show them that you CANNOT do 20mph and make everyone behind you happy

5 Cut the Bollox off all car thieves and shove them in their mouths

Pete

Hos 09 December 2000 08:31 PM

Might stop idiots staying in the fastlane of the M6 and sit at 60. At least in rush hour traffic - instead of going 5 meters forwards then stopping they will just go along at 70 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

JohnD 09 December 2000 09:39 PM

Pete!
Dont like the sound of No 4 I`m old enough to be a grandad so will I have my Scoobysport exhausted, 4-headlamped, 17" O.Z.superT equiped plaything confiscated?
Also cant agree with No5, I think they should be made to taste EACH OTHERS!
Ancient old b*****d from Romford (GATSO county)

pslewis 09 December 2000 09:43 PM

Yes JOHND hand the car over to me this instance!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

I doubt very much that you pull out of a side junction and then take 5 minutes to get to 20mph?! so may let you keep driving ok? http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

And about time too! The UK is the safest place to drive in the entire world except for Sweden (marginally) and Iceland!
We should not rest until there are only five cars in the UK (like Iceland)
If we all just sat in our cars instead of driving them anywhere we could be even safer than iceland. (except for suicides of course)
I would willingly give up my house and all its contents for the privilege of being stuck in a traffic jam somewhere, unlikely to cause damage there eh tony! .
Tony Blair I think your'e wonderful http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif
