Here's this weeks new bike thread...
So the girlfriend is after a new bike for cycling to the gym / work on and also for days out and holidays. She'll mainly be riding on the road but also off road (read canal towpaths and marked trails etc - maybe the odd field, nothing too serious). Does this look like a good deal
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=60056 Anyone got any other / better suggestions for the budget (max £300)? All opinions are greatly appreciated. |
Not a MTB fanatic but bought a GT a while back and love it, never had a problem with it and still going strong. Good choice in Bikes IMO if on a limited budget

Nothing at all wrong with your choice...looks like a good bargain :thumb:
Alternative may be Specialized Hardrock Sport Womens' '07 [was £299.95] (£239.95) |
Yes, as above, your choice is good.
For roads and canal paths, all you need is the lightest hybrid you can find for the money. TBH you could quite happliy have rigid fork for that sort of stuff (at that price the fork might be a bit spongey and absorb some of your lass's undoubted energy, which you will want her to save for other purposes. ;) Andy Mc |
Wife has just got this and it's perfect for trail riding as described:
Evans Cycles: Product: Specialized Globe Comp IG8 2007 Hybrid Bike Fast but very comfy and the 8 speed hub gears and carbon fork (with slight suspension) work very well. If £450 is a bit high, they do a cheaper version: Evans Cycles: Product: Specialized Globe Sport 2007 Hybrid Bike |

Actually, did appear to post the first so I re-typed everything and posted again - then ended up with both. I'll have a look at the other options now... |
the GT seems ok, though does anyone else think the full RRP is rather optimistic given the spec?!
just make sure she gets a good trial, and likes the position / handling. I bought a Spec hybrid a couple of years ago for community, and totally hated it. just couldn't get use to the geometry after 15 years on mountain bikes. any decent brand should be fine really, just get the one she prefers after a ride |
PWhittle - Hybrids vary a lot though.
The Spesh Cirrus is derived from road bikes, the Globe is derived from MTBs and rides a lot more like one. |
Any other views or opinions, before I have to get credit card out?
