WinXP - defeat login password
Is there any "utilities" that can gain entry into a WindowsXP computer, when you don't know the password ?
A friend has just had a disgruntled employee chnage the password on his works computer (he was sacked for other reasons) |
just start pc up in safe mode, press f8 at start of boot up, then change passwords that way.
|
WTF ?!?
Surely it can't be THAT simple ?! What if the user changed the default admin account password (like they have in this case?) |
yeah thats bollox
lophtcrack is the one i used last time ( might be L0ftcrack can't remember now ) |

If your friend just wants the data, plug the hard drive into another computer via USB and take the data off. Much easier than messing around with passwords. Steve |
nice one! thanks
Rather than mess on with taking the hard disk out, I'll try the offline password recovery that comes with that bootdisk |

there's loads websites telling u to do the same thing, wake up man! I'll echo HHxx post and WRX Rich and add my own. ERD commander if you can source a copy take a look at Bart's PE as well for general admin related duties Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD |
I'll also recommend ERD Commander
Has the Locksmith utility which enables you to reset any passwords including local administrator, also useful for boot-up problems, services etc :) |
great info, thanks lads.
In the end, I went for something called Hiren's Boot Disk, which contains the same kinda stuff, including offline password recovery. I must admit, its a little daunting that you can defeat the WinXP password system so easily (given the right software) |
