Anyone had dealings with them?

I'm interested in a stage two conversions, which includes the APEX fuelling and boost controllers to produce 1.1bar and supposedly 300bhp+

Doesn't say if the base car is a UK or WRX scoob...

I know one of the NAM boys had these gizmos on his scoob to produce impressive results.

SPEN555 02 January 2002 01:45 PM

Squizz,

I got some mail from them regarding these stage builds and their power quotes were on a Jap spec car STi I think.

Damian.

Squizz 02 January 2002 02:23 PM

Cheers. :)

Would I be wasting time & money on such APEX stuff for a UK car then?

SPEN555 02 January 2002 03:01 PM

Squizz,

I couldn't honestly say.

IMHO if you look at STi's that have been modified they tend to produce peak power at approx 6500rpm (looking at various dyno results on dyno page). STi's red line at 8250rpm so when modding I think tuner's don't take advantage of the extra revs due to a lot of Subaru's blowing their engines at high revs. So I can't see why a UK spec would not equal the performance gains of an STi.

When you add up the cost of the Fuel controller and boost controller I think you may as well be going the Link ECU route. Both setups have their followers and so its difficult to see which is the most cost effective.

Damian.

Squizz 02 January 2002 03:41 PM

Damian,

I agree... Maybe I'll just make do with a de-cat and see how that pans out. ;)

At least the APEX gadgets would have produced some decent eye-candy in the centre of my dashboard.

I do 50 miles per day, so I also wanted something to allow switchable Economy/Performance modes (ie. Economy being no worse fuel consumption/performance than I have now!!).

Hmmm...

Thanks for the help. :D

SPEN555 02 January 2002 04:44 PM

Squizz,

That's one advantage over the link I had not considered being able to have different boost settings.

I am currently fiddling about with a Dawes device and I am running an extra 2PSi and it has not had an adverse effect with fuel consumption.

I too do 50 miles per day and I think its the AWD that beggers the consumption up as after fitting a boost gauge I was surprised to see that the majority of the time my turbo is not running any boost.

Damian.

Rob W 02 January 2002 07:35 PM

Alanjack, I take it you have a uk car, what MY is it?
Did you do any other mods turbo/intercooler etc.

Cheers
Rob

alanjack 02 January 2002 11:14 PM

My car is a Terzo MY98, The mods are:
Apexi fuel+boost controllers.
uprated fuel pump.
fuel pressure regulator.
HKS fuel cut defender.
HKS hiper muffler straight through exhaust.
HKS super power flow air filter.
I would definately recommend AP racing big brake conversion as the brakes now struggle to stop the car now, that said though bigger wheels would be needed as well.
Then it would be manifold and front mounted HKS intercooler.

ChrisB 02 January 2002 11:42 PM

Alan, did you come on the last Northern Meet?

piravlos 03 January 2002 10:52 AM

If I am not mistaken those two gadgets cost nearly a grand. Wouldn't be better to just purchase a programmable ecu instead?
I tried afc, it basically does the work of a fuel pressure regulator, nothing more. If you want to increase boost and fuel do it the proper way. Just buy a programmable ecu or reprogram the existing one.

Hope this helps

Squizz 03 January 2002 11:06 AM

Thanks for the info...

AlanJack - Do you play with the APEX settings yourself, or just leave them well alone, having been set by RC Developments?

1.3 bar? Isn't that quite a bit for stock internals??

Interesting stuff... :)

SPEN555 03 January 2002 12:54 PM

Last night I looked up the details RC sent me and they state;

Stage 1 0.9Bar UK 235bhp WRX 255BHP

Stage 2 1.1Bar UK 280bhp

Stage 3 1.3/1.4Bar

Damn I've forgot the rest of it. LOL!

Stage 1 is an Exhaust & filter job.

If you go for Stage 3 do you have to have bought all parts from stage 1 and 2?

Damian.

Squizz 03 January 2002 01:15 PM

Damian,

I've found an advert in a mag showing the costs for each stage and the bits involved. Hopefully (unlike Prodrive) they'll accomodate ones current mods. So I wouldn't want an HKS induction kit, as I'm more than happy with my cheap'n'cheerful K&N57i. Got my eye on a decent 2nd hand exhaust system, etc, etc...

I'll have to keep it all on the back-burner.

As for the LINK setup by BR Developments... Hmmm. Tempting.

Wonder what Powerstation can do - They're "Down the road" from me, after all.

Thanks for the help everyone. :D

paul corrigan 03 January 2002 01:24 PM

ive been in aljacks car before and after the work was done ,the car is so much faster than before
but you will never keep up with me aljack

mutant_matt 03 January 2002 01:44 PM

Squizz,

The PPP runs (I think) about 18PSI of boost (1.242 Bar) and it does this all day everyday (well you know what I mean) with no problems and it must be safe for Prodrive/IM to give a warranty on it. So 1.3 is not out of the question as long as the APEX-i kit can control fuelling correctly.

Having said that, presumably, at 1.3, the small turbo would be on the limits of flow and perhaps creating more heat than may be desirable? Just a thought....

FMIC would off course help in that dept....

Someone will some real experience in this area care to comment?

Matt :)

SPEN555 03 January 2002 02:02 PM

Matt,

To constantly get that kind of boost you need a full s/s exhaust which of course invalidates your warranty.

Damian.

Matt Churchill 03 January 2002 03:09 PM

Squizz,

I researched RC a bit late last year, as I do not know whether to go this route or the Link.

I spoke to them, and they do not like K&N induction kits, for the same reason a lot of people don't, and they would recommend a HKS product instead.

I seem to remember that on a UK car (with stage 1), stage 2 would take you to around 280bhp, that is certainly my aim. Which is the best route is open to debate a lot more though.

The dealings I have had, they have always been exceptionally helpful and quick to respond.

I think by the time you get to stage 3, you've changed half of the engine anyway!

Stuff certainly looks really good and will, by the look of it, make an enormous difference to the car.

Matt

NB The other thing I've noticed is that they quote stage 1 at 0.9 bar, with 1.1 at stage 2. Well my UK car, with full scoobysport exhaust and K&N is getting 1 bar constant on full boost, so presumably, the 1.1. quoted is a conservative estimate!!

(edited to add the NB)

I have the apexi gear on my car at the moment, running 1.3bar, but also have a program for 0.7 bar for everyday driving with the fuel turned down with it. Now I have 30 to the gallon and with the flick of a button 300+ bhp.

Mellow Yellow ! 03 January 2002 07:52 PM

Have yet to see another scoob eat my P1 girls......even Craigs VERY WELL SORTED scoob (New Age Motorsport) couldn't manage it a Donnington track day......
Alan,Paul.....come to Oulton park on the 23rd February (Saturday)....book via www.easytrack.co.uk....thats were the talk stops and the action begins guys :D

SecretAgentMan 03 January 2002 09:13 PM

Boys boys... :D

At a trackday the car has very little to do with things...the car does what the drivers tells it to do (mostly)...so a comparison of cars at such a venue is quite silly, not to mention risky.

This kinda talk (even with tongue firmly in cheek) just ends up in tears...remember the recent accidents on the last trackdays?

Grow up.

:p

Now what you DO need to settle yer argument is a rolling road day...or a visit to the pod.

:D

Mellow Yellow ! 04 January 2002 12:09 AM

LOL.......bring it on......bring it on.......all talk and no action.....Oulton Park.....23rd February.....I'll even wear a blindfold ! :D:D:D
UNBEATABLE BABY !!!!!!

Squizz 04 January 2002 09:24 AM

Thanks again, everyone.

I guess I'm still very tempted by the RC setup mostly becuase of the use of the APEX controllers. As I'm going to organise a down-pipe and a decatted exhaust system from other suppliers, I may find someone who'll have the expertise to fit & set up the controllers for a bit less cash!

I wonder if one of them will fit in a dash pod, replacing the gubbins tray? Where will the other one go?

OR...

I could save the cash, leave my car as it stands (perfectly acceptable for commuting!), and buy the track-day TR7V8 I've promised myself!

Argh! :(

RICH WILD 04 January 2002 10:29 AM

Alan,

Why don't you put your name down for the rolling road day at Well Lane in Feb? It's only £20.

I've gone a similar route to you.
HKS FCD
HKS AFR
HKS EVC3 Boost Controller running 1.3 bar
HKS Iridium plugs
Blitz induction kit
Full Jap Innovations system
Lightened pulleys

So I'd be interested to compare our setups/power outputs as we are both running the same boost. I'm hoping for 270-280bhp.

Are you up for it?

Rich

CraigH 04 January 2002 10:35 AM

Mellow,

1 word - slicks. :p

Like I've said before, I'm not keen on having ridiculous grip levels hence stresses through a "standard" road car....

Plus I'm a cr4p driver :D

Alan,

You have a go at Mellow, yet your post states your car eats P1s and STis?

To "eat" a car, I would imagine you'd need to be around 3-4 secs 60-100mph faster - with your setup I can't see that you're running much more power than either of those 2, hence you may be faster, but won't eat them.

Thankyou ;)

Mellow Yellow ! 04 January 2002 02:59 PM

LOL.....again @ Alanjack.....as Craig says I was only replying to your sweeping statement of your own with regards to STi's and P1's !!!
Why you seemingly think ill of me when you dont know me puzzles me :(
Surely this board is about constructive advice.....supporting.....and humerous banter ?? If I cant reply to a comment you post without you becoming a pi$$ taker then maybe we should meet up and have a chat....I'm an Oldham lad myself...born and bred there, in fact dragged up more like....:)
My mobile is 07799 - 881188 !

ScoobyJawa 04 January 2002 03:11 PM

Just following on from what Matt was saying on page 1. I think their estimates are very conservative. Are the figures they quote for peak or held boost?

My MY99 with a straight through Magnex all the way (and nothing else AFAIK;)) hits a peak of 1.15 bar and holds at 1.0 or 1.05 bar...............

alanjack 04 January 2002 04:17 PM

Exactly Mellow.
If you read back through this thread you will find it was you who had a go at me and Paul in the first instance, as you so rightly say this board is all about banter/opinions etc. I am only being like you Mellow, lets just be friends, I don't like the idea of a fight, sounds kinda silly really!

Yes I was on NM6.

No I don't touch the units in the car. You can mess around with the units and alter settings but it's a bit pointless.
