do i need new car re mapping

hello everyone, ive just bought a scooby for the first time (what great cars they are)its a 1999 2litre turbo, with a few mods.A full stainless, inc down pipe, apexi dual intake, and a manual boost control ,which is turned up to max.its got a fuel /air mixture guage that keeps going from lean ,to rich all the time. Can anyone tel me firstly,is this a normal thing that happens and should the car have been remapped,to take the mods into consideration.the lad i bought it from says its ok ,and that the remap should only be done if ichanged the turbo and injectors etc.If anyone could help it would put my mind at rest, as ive been told no3 piston can burn out with these symptoms.Thanks.

I'd have said yes it will need re-mapping, plus I would be a little concerned that the boost has been whacked up to full - Dont take all I say as gospel, there are far more clued up people on here that will be along shortly.

In that case turn the boost down then.

i dont think its the conventional type its a pipe with a bolt threaded in a bit crude looking.

are these safe?

If the guage goes from rich to lean and back its probably connected to a two point and not a wide band sensor and so is a complete waste of time, turn the boost down a bit until you can get the AFR's checked out, it probably doesn't NEED a remap, but it almost certainly would benefit a lot from one!

i dont mean to sound daft buts whats an afr bud,and if i turned it down would it run better. And how much would a remap cost.thanks for all your advice.

What boost are you running, or do you not have a boost gauge?

wolverine67 13 July 2007 09:22 AM

yes thers a boost guage in the car but to tel you the truth ,ive not seen what it goes around to.what pressures would you say are safemate.

Running lean and over boosting are a recipe for a melted piston, especially if it's an import. Least thts what Powerstation tell me.
Get a remap, painfully expensive but cheaper in the long run:)
