Bottom end rebuild or engine upgrade? HELP NEEDED!!
 

Right, where to begin.....I currently have a money pit of a JDM bugeye WRX. I've just spent a fortune on it over the last month, with a blown td04 being replaced with a VF35....

Having finally got the dam thing back from the garage, I then tried to nurse the car about 50 miles home, to where the following week it was booked in to be remapped. Unfortunately I got nowhere near home, after a gradual knocking got louder I pulled off the road to take a look. The oil levels were fine, not being mechanically minded I decided to abondon the car for the night. On return to the car the following morning with a mechanic he as told me my 'bottom end has gone'. Is that related to replacing the turbo????

Firstly, what the hell does that mean, and secondly what is my best route to getting this repaired. Both financially and in modifying terms!! Do I get the bottom end rebuilt or go for a conversion?

Hopefully there's some people on here from the trade that can point me in the right direction and give some ball park figures?

Starting to pull my hair out, even considered getting rid of the dam thing and finish my 5 year love affair with several Impreza's. Seriously though, where do you draw the line and let your head rule your heart for a change??? Can't afford to keep throwing money at it all the time....

Since in business he has done about 1100 Impreza engines, so has seen it all.

He also will not take advantage of your mechanical knowledge.
The turbo has nothing to do with the 'bottom end gone' (if indeed it has).

I would think it likely, that by fitting the VF35 and not getting it remapped immediately you have contributed to the failure. The boost control maps [ amongst other things ] are completely dissimilar between those 2 turbo set ups and I am convinced that is the primary cause of the failure. Especially if the car has not been showing any signs of distress with current level mods up to that point.

Hopefully it's not your big end bearing that's gone. If it is, you could be looking at 3K all in for a rebuild, which will be necessary if it is.

I own an STi Type-R. Unfortunately these cars are the worst for needing rebuilds. Due to the map being set for Japanese fuel and the quick gear ratios. However this can also apply to base WRX's also.

The rule of thum is that any performance modification made to these flat four engines must be adjusted accordingly via a map. Otherwise the fueling will be out. This is crucial to these particular engines. Ignore anyone who tells you otherwise unless you wish to run the risk of a rebuild! The only thing I reckon you could get away with is a rear box, since hardly any performance is gained.

When I purchased my Type-R I didn't realise just how many can suffer from rebuilds, both WRX and STi engines, any sometimes with no performance increase modifications.

Dave at API is deffinately the chap to speak to. I'm taking my Impreza there for a map since the miles are at 56K and it could well let go now despite no mods being made.

The ECUTECH TECH 3 apparantley is the product to use for my car. If you make any mods, easily mapped once more.

Mapping is piece of mind. Ignore it at your peril.

bottom end rebuilds aren'y that much, i was quoted £1000 all in when mine was suspected and i also have a bugeye wrx.

sorry to hear about your car mate i just blew all my money on my first scoob and it melted a piston after 3 months i have been down every avenue to repair it but by farthe best advise i was given was by david at api top bloke needless to say mine is going to api in the next couple of weeks for a complete rebuild hope you manage to sort it:)

hi api david my car recently turbo went on it engine wasnt ratling while the turbo had blown we only could hear the turbo making a windin sound got it replaced with a vf 23 there originaly was a vf 24 in there took it for a drive on the m6 and the engine started to loose power and the ratling started and got worser do u reckon the turbo has caused this and all the mechanics i have shown it to say the bottom end has gone the car is a sti type r subaru imported model r reg can u help me on this what can i do what is the best option for me to sort this engine out :thumb:

:lol: I think just the replacement parts would come to more than that! Crank, rods, pistons, and gasket kit not to mention a few other parts plus labour. Fair enough not all that may be needed. But a 1k all in is probably their price to get your custom, then they double/triple up the price when they have your car and engine in pieces!!!

I agree £1k is too cheap :cuckoo:...... Unless there using a trained monkey to do the work ;) ..... The other thing to consider is what is there track record with re-building Impreza's? Always better to use someone with a proven track record IMO to make sure the job is done good once will save money in the long run.....
