CS:S/Steam issues
Running my laptop over a wireless network. Nearly all the time the wireless connection is fine. In fact the only time I really have issues is when playing CS:S.
I can be online for a while (time can be anything from 1 minute to 3 hours+) and then suddenly my wireless connection will drop :brickwall It doesn't normally do this, is this a known problem? |
no, the wireless wont know its CS:S, maybe its the upload being maxed out or something....
difficult one |
perhaps it's doing it all the time, and you are only noticing it when you play cs:s?
Two things spring to mind: - from a command prompt type "ping -t bbc.co.uk" This will ping bbc until you tell it not to (ctrl + c) in the results you can see how many packets have failed (due to wireless being lost). - Powersave cutting in? |
As above, it could be that your wireless drops out fairly regularly, but you don't notice it, except for when playing CS:S.
I play WoW, and that will drop your connection from the server completely if the network drops out. Have you tried playing with a cable conection to your router to rule out (or avoid) wireless problems. I've found wireless to be a bit intermittent really; my network at home is all in CAT 5. John. |

pinging away at the moment. Average appears to be about 25ms is that good or bad?
|
packets lost = 1
|
let it run for a good 3 hours and then have a look.
packet loss is the one you are looking for. 25ms is pretty damn good especially over wireless |

lol - they wont even notice
|
Left it running for about an hour, used the internet while it was running too.
Packets sent = 2180 Received = 2148 Lost = 32 (1%) Minimum = 20ms, max 182ms, average = 31ms I think my point is that whilst playing CS:S the line actually drops and I have to reconnect. It doesn't do this at all (although there may well be temporary interruptions that Iam unaware of) in normal use. |
all it would take in cs:s to drop you would be 0.5 second of loss.
try running the ping at the same time as CS:S When it drops - alt-tab and have a look - you might see one or two drops |
Under XP my wireless card drops the connection when the CPU is heavily loaded. As soon as the load is reduced then the connection comes back up again, but it's a pain - printing to a network printer, for example, is woefully unreliable, and I dare say running games would cause the same problem.
Network adapter is a Dell WLAN 1350 802.11g mini-PCI card. |

What isp are you with
And which server are you attempting to play on ? Are they hosted by dustworld ? If so dustworld have been having major problems with VM users over the past week or so. Could be related to that although unlikely unless you are attempting to play on the same server. |
(nice laptop, Dell XPS per chance?)

Can't remember why I didn't go for the Dell, probably the same issues as Alienware I think. I'm not disappointed. I watch 24 in my office at lunchtime in surround sound and they complain they can hear me downstairs :thumb: |
