Exhaust (backbox?)

I have an 06 STi and it just doesn't make the proper Scooby burble.

I test drove the Prodrive and didn't like the droning at 30-40 etc. around town, but its too quiet as it is - sounds a bit strangled, especially in lower gears, and when booting it isn't nice enough.

I don't really want loud noise, and I don't want droning, but I do want the burble back !

I've no idea what to look for, but someone told me I can achieve this by changing the backbox only. Can anybody recommend anything? Can I have a listen !!!

evil.soup 26 June 2007 11:08 PM

I changed mine for a Magnex cat back system. It sounds much better and now has the burble back although it could be a little louder for me sometimes. Just the back box will help, but to get the sound you want, i think you will need to replace the centre section aswell.
The Magnex cost me just under £300 but Demon Tweeks are now selling a Miltex cat back system for just £250 which may be a better choice if you have future power mods in mind.
Hope this helps :-)

I have the Prodrive backbox on my 05 MY STI and thought it was abit quiet, I changed the centre section and got a deeper sound but not too loud. Anything from Hayward & Scott is highly recommended.

evil.soup 26 June 2007 11:18 PM

Just found a video clip from a Pistonheads run. Sound isnt great as its so windy, but you can hear my car go off at full throttle near the end of the vid. Im a couple of cars behind the black Lambo which sounds awesome by the way.

The scoobyworld Ninja back boxes are good for giving the burble but without too much noise :thumb: :thumb:

I had one on my MY05 WRX until I swapped it for a Blitz Nur Spec, which is quite a bit louder :norty: :norty:

The Scoobyworld website has sound clips of the Ninja back boxes on there too.

Mark :D :D

Dreamergirl.

Any chance of a look at your backbox ? :D

Norman Dog 27 June 2007 07:29 AM

Got mine from here:-

PipeWerx - Performance Exhaust Specialist

It's a full catback system. Had to put the bung in as it's louder than a NUR Spec R! :norty:

Replace the resonator , its cheaper and more effective.

V good advice :thumb: Do that along with the backbox and your guaranteed the burble back

dreamer_girl 27 June 2007 08:28 AM

Ok I know what the backbox is, but what's the resonator?
Thanks guys !
And rofl @ Bob!

I don't mind if its a bit loud outside the car (although that's not what I'm after), but I def. don't want the droning inside the car - it's a daily driver, I have to do work calls on the handsfree etc., and I don't want a headache

What difference would the resonator make on its own ?

dreamer_girl 27 June 2007 08:45 AM

Have just looked on Scoobyworld and I like the look of the Racebox backbox - anybody got one?

3 1/2 inch tail pipe on a new age car looks a bit small IMHO
what about the TSL group n ? looks like good value & the 4 inch pipe fills the cut out in the bumper perfectly,,,, :)

Mikkel 27 June 2007 09:27 AM

I have the racebox exhaust (back box and centre section) as like you didn't like the drone when driving on motorways etc. It is great. Good rumble when you apply the right foot and not too loud when you don't.

I recommend it.

ozzreid1964 27 June 2007 09:30 AM

got a sports cat down pipe de cat centre and racebox back box sounds nice no drone through the car at all its all fromscoobyworld

53 27 June 2007 09:35 AM

Hayward and Scott de-resonated centre section.

Stainless exhausts manifolds headers

The reason I recommend doing this is thats exactly what I intend doing on my MY06STi. I went full Hayward and Scott on my old car and it sounded great, but in all honesty was too much for everyday use. The resonator on the new cars is massive and once removed the STI back box will sound great. I also found that the old car rev'd smoother with the resonator removed.:thumb:

That said don't be surprised if I bung the old H&S BB within a month :lol1:

Im looking for a backbox and centre section but dont know what to go for ,scoobyworld do a mid section and backbox combi, but i dont know what to go for,i want something thats not to noisey but a little more than the standard one thats fitted now,and i want to add other parts to it later when she lets me:norty: can anyone advise me ,and do u gat any more power from a centre and back box or just a differant sound, cheers .Does the centre section have a cat in it ?

MTayler 27 June 2007 10:53 AM

Just ditched the Prodrive backbox on my 03 wrx for a TSL Group N backbox and de-resonated centre section, absolutely superb :thumb: !.
Build quality is first rate and the noise is spot on, not overly loud but still gives a nice burble :D .

Its just a resenator box to reduce the exhaust noise in the cabin. And it does make a difference !!

It defo wasnt me, i was polishing the wifes car, wearing my fingers to the bone. There is a WR1 around here somewhere so it could have been him.:wonder:

I always flash:norty:

dreamer_girl 28 June 2007 08:10 AM

Thanks guys

Is removing the resonator something you can do yourself, or do you have to buy a new section?

How big is the standard newage tail pipe then (still in my jimjams so not going out to measure it!)

The resonator is the centre section that joins onto the backbox. You buy a straight through pipe with no resonator and swap them over. If you have ramps its about an hours work. :)

Quite right, a dreamergirl with a headache would be absolutely no use at all ! :lol1: ;)

I have Prodrive backbox, but with H&S decat, deresonated centre pipe and Scoobyworld Ninja sportcat downpipe. Pretty quiet overall but with a half decent burble and a healthy noise on WOT.

Yip.. but I run it on a JDM twin scroll so its a bit different...sounds 100% better than the std setup I had though!

Had the TSL gp N & de res centre on my 2004 Sti and it was perfect :thumb: nice rumble, no drone.

Luckyscoob 28 June 2007 01:20 PM

I currently have a TSL back box and centre section replacing the resonated pipe and it really made the car come alive. The centre section made the biggest difference. The sound is just right for somebody wanting burble without earbleeding loudness. Having said that i'm looking to sell and get a Blitz nur spec r as i've just got to get it out of my system!:freak3:

Exactly ;)

So anybody got any idea how big the standard tail pipe is?

I quite like the look of the Racebox one (it looks "finished") but am thinking carefully about resonators etc. I don't have ramps but I do have 4 axle stands and a couple of trolley jacks... not very strong though and usually struggle to undo bolts etc. !

What I need is to hear some of these set ups!!

raw1879 28 June 2007 09:17 PM

prodrive back boxs are very good and not to loud if you want a burble and up your boots change the up pipe for a de cat virson

muttly66 28 June 2007 09:45 PM

vortex afterburner from scoobyworld deep sound and not too loud
sound clip on site

dreamer_girl 28 June 2007 09:50 PM

Have tried their soundclips and they seem to be broken :(
