astraboy 27 December 2001 06:28 PM

Just got some cash together and want to take the 3-door to 300+bhp.
Any idea how much it will cost? or how long it takes? who does the conversion the best? I was thinking of Mr Shead....
astraboy.

Little Miss WRX 27 December 2001 06:32 PM

Where are you local to?

I think Castle Performance in Stoke are good, I think it is them that John Felstead uses for his Westie, though I could be wrong.......I wait to be either corrected or agreed with :D

astraboy 27 December 2001 06:35 PM

I'm down south near Staines, Power engineering are V. near but I would really rather Mr. Shead tune me car for me.
astraboy.

SL2 27 December 2001 07:54 PM

I've been using Power engineering for about 4 years and had no problems with them. Depends on how far you want to travel.

Shaun 28 December 2001 01:19 PM

300bhp is pussy power mate.........you might as well go to the 330bhp conversion. What you need :

3 bar map sensor £75
4 x 803 injectors £280
-31 actuator £75
Chip £200-£250
Grp A Head Gasket (especially on the 2wd cossies) £250-£300 fitted

I assume you have an uprated filter and straight through stainless exhaust system.

Take the above prices as your base figure and find out what the tuners quote you for the lot, and then you will find out how much labour they all charge. The job will take no longer than a couple of hours (The head gasket may take up to a day cause the head will need to be machined).

Regards,
Shaun.

ChristianR 28 December 2001 01:22 PM

bah! wish the impreza was that cheap to tune!

Little Miss WRX 28 December 2001 01:29 PM

Hmmm I can see the replacement for my soon disappearing rex materialising here........

Richard Askew 28 December 2001 01:32 PM

oi Shaun ... what power are u gonna be running and whens it gonna be ready??

Shaun 28 December 2001 01:38 PM

Just before Christmas I had done a deal with somebody off the RS board to buy a Sierra 430bhp motor. I had organised to keep the engine and sell the car on to somebody else. The guy then sold the car to somebody else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically the money is still in the bank waiting to be spent. Realistically I am waiting for a mate to conclude some testing on a Xtrac Straight cut box. As soon as it has passed the testing stage, I will have the whole lot done at once, but because of the gearbox testing it looks like it wont be until the Summer now.

It will be a 420bhp conversion.

:)

Richard Askew 28 December 2001 01:39 PM

...gizza go then mister .. :D

why the tran-x? how about an R&D custom built Grp A jobbie?

Shaun 28 December 2001 01:43 PM

Xtrac without doubt are the best gear sets in the world. The gear kit from them costs about £2500. A Grp N big tooth kit from R&D costs the same amount, and WON'T handle the power. It has to be straight cut (especially for that rally like gearbox whine!!!! :D). Quaife want £10k off of me for a Grp A box to handle the power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do the sums, matey. ;)

Richard Askew 28 December 2001 01:45 PM

<thud> Ten G's?? fcuking hellfire... does it have to be a new one??

Shaun 28 December 2001 01:47 PM

2nd hand Grp A boxs are like rocking horse poo......good ones anyhow. And then you are still required to spend a few grand for a 4x4 one AND then you will have to get it serviced anyhow.

Richard Askew 28 December 2001 01:50 PM

just thinking cos I know a few peeps that use Tran - x, quaife's and getrags when they rally...

astraboy 28 December 2001 06:27 PM

330 sounds nice mate, but will the clutch, gearbox and drivetrain be able to handle it? Will I have a relability problems with the upped power?
also, will I be able to handle the power? I'm running 15" wheels with mintex pads on standard discs, She's been lowered on chassis dynamics springs with standard dampers up front and gas Spax on the back. will I need to change this? particually the wheels cos she catches me out all the time and I'm worried I'll stuff her if I up the power.
astraboy.

Shaun 28 December 2001 06:31 PM

All the transmission will handle that kind of power, with full reliability. You will need to check with Mark Shead/Castle Performance/Harvey Gibbs that the block will handle the boost, as I know that 2wd blocks are not as strong as the 4wd ones.

As regards to you being able to handle the power, I can't comment mate. All you can do is drive to your ability..........but I do know of several people running the 420bhp conversion on RWD with no problems. All of your suspension/wheels set-up will be fine.

astraboy 28 December 2001 06:38 PM

hmm, cant say I aint tempted mate. :D
okay, I'll admit it I'm physically holding myself back from phoning Sheady right now!
330bhp for under a grand.
ooooooohhhhhhh goooooooood! ;)
astraboy.

AJF 28 December 2001 08:55 PM

mr sheady is a must for cossie power

astraboy 28 December 2001 09:31 PM

I'm seriously considering going there just for the M.A. Developments sticker mate!

AJF 28 December 2001 10:05 PM

butt clackson must be due a new video this year and going fastter than Mark down that runway has to done

Monte 28 December 2001 11:11 PM

Astraboy, take your car to SCS for the best service (and price) IMO 01733 576614. Harvey is the real cossie guru:D

Shaun,

The gearkit is made by DP Engineering and not xtrac. The mental is however treated by xtrac. If I was you at that power level I would get a quaife gearkit (or better still the 'swedish gearkit') supplied and fitted by DOME - 01527 577551. Do note that Martin Hadland has had the quaife gearkit for over five years and only recently had problems due to the box not being put back together properly after it was stripped for a check. DOME has sorted it now.

I am also going to look down another route now and use a 2wd gearbox(T5/T56) with a remote transfer box. May even chop the transfer box from an MT75!!

Cheers,

Dan

Astraboy,

My saff runs exactly the spec as described by Shaun. It's a lovely amount of power, but a little difficult when trying to keep up with Mike Rainbird!

Gearbox and clutch should be okay on that level of power.

Mine was built by Harvey Gibbs at SCS.

astraboy 30 December 2001 06:11 PM

thats my main problem. I've just about mastered 285bhp but she still catches me out from time to time. I worried that 330bhp will do more than threaten to throw me over the armco.:eek:
astraboy.

Scooby_Killer 31 December 2001 06:53 PM

Astraboy,

330bhp you will need a clutch, cos the standard one will slip a bit
use the orginal clutch cover, and buy a alcon 6 plate paddle clutch,
and the feel of the pedal will be the same as standard, you willnot know that you have a uprated clutch.
I think I have meet you at Brunters, with Redline mag I owned the moonstone Rs500,you was the lad with the white 3dr,doing a few donuts!!
