Just noticed - Thanks for 20Meg in Swindon VirginMedia!

Just noticed that my Newsleecher is currently downloading at 2.34MB/s..

Yes, 2.34 megabytes per second - so 20Mb/s or there abouts!

Thanks VirginMedia - I don't care if you don't have Sky One any more (as I don't take the TV service, I use Sky!) - but the broadband is great...

An episode of LOST, et al, should be (well, working it out) - 800MB per episode (if I take the high def versions) comes in at about 5 minutes!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Activated today then? Mine was only working at 7mb last night...

So, do existing customers on 4Mb get a speed boost too ?

Dr.No 15 June 2007 04:01 PM

Just says "Complete" here Iain:

Where's my upgrade?

So - no idea when, in the last few days, it happened... but it's certainly damn quick right now!

Come 4pm of course, it may get s-l-o-w-e-r.......

Iain Young 15 June 2007 04:07 PM

Yep, it's said "complete" since Wednesday, but I'm still only getting 7mb (although I haven't checked today yet - I'm in the office)...

I was told not which is why I now have Sky Broadband getting 15000Kbps with a saving of £15 per month.

Iain Young 15 June 2007 06:29 PM

Just got home and given it a go. Only getting 6Mb now...

Dr.No 15 June 2007 07:15 PM

Just tried again, using Speedtest.net (to Maidenhead rather than London)..

and am consistently getting >10Mb, and just hit 13.5Mb.

The 20Mb+ that I achieved this pm was to the VirginMedia newsgroup servers - so it's gonna be as quick as it possibly can be.

Iain Young 15 June 2007 11:42 PM

That's odd. Using the same speedtest, I'm only getting around 8mb download. What newsreader do you use to access the newsgroups? I think I may give that a try next...

Is this on the phone line or via cable ?

Iain Young 16 June 2007 12:57 PM

Cable. I'm pretty sure it's the modem at fault. It's an old TJ210 which I've had for 5+ years, and the specs claim it doesn't even support 10mbs

Silver Scooby Sport 16 June 2007 02:23 PM

I'm on a phone line here... I use BT and we have no cable in the area, roll on when they get the phone exchanges up to this sort of speed.

Dr.No 16 June 2007 02:55 PM

Errr... unless you intend to move house to a building within spitting distance (almost literally) of your local exchange I don't think you'll be seeing 20Mb+ speeds down a normal copper telephone line.

Fibre to the home will bring the next big speed hike - which is what we need to start looking forward to.

Silver Scooby Sport 16 June 2007 04:07 PM

It's going to be a lonnnnggggg wait then.

VM has tested the 50mb and 100mb connection in London and it works.. in theory the fibre cable that hold our network can be uncapped... its the servers that suck balls
