video game console sales - story so far (May)

* Nintendo DS: 423,000
* Nintendo Wii: 338,000
* Sony PSP: 221,000
* Sony PlayStation 2: 187,000
* Microsoft Xbox 360: 155,000
* Sony PlayStation 3: 81,000

June 14 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co. extended the lead of its Wii video-game console over Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, selling more than 338,000 machines in the U.S. in May.

Sony sold 81,600 PlayStation 3 consoles and Microsoft sold 154,900 Xbox 360s, according to data compiled by NPD Group Inc., a research firm in Port Washington, New York. Nintendo's Wii has outsold the competition since it was released in November.

Sales of game consoles grew 79 percent to $221.4 million from the year-earlier period, while console software rose 31 percent to $274 million, NPD said. Nintendo had the most popular console game with ``Mario Party 8.'' Sony's new machine continued to struggle in software sales, failing to place a single game in the top 10.

Sony's older PlayStation 2 outsold both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, with sales of 187,800 machines.

Activision Inc.'s ``Spiderman 3'' for the Sony's PlayStation 2 was the second-ranked console game, while Nintendo's ``Wii Play,'' which comes with a remote control, was third, NPD said. The top game for Microsoft's Xbox was ``Forza Motorsport 2,'' in fourth place.

I just ordered myself a Wii, giving it to the pub though so we can play on it Fridays and Sundays on the 60" plasma :D

So these figures are just for May then?

PS3 isnt doing so good is it?

there is confusion regarding the figures, where are they from?

They come from NPD.

More hardware sales numbers are coming in, thanks to Bloomberg. The Wii sold 338K units in May, while the 360 sold a disappointing 155K. The PS3 meanwhile dropped from 82K last month to just 81K sold (81,604 units to be exact, according to SCEA). At least the PSP sold a healthy 221,120 units, according to SCEA. We also found out (via Sony ironically) that the GBA sold 80,554 units and the GameCube sold 10,728 units.
SCEA's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications, Dave Karraker issued us the following statement: "According to NPD data, May 2007 showed a 27.5% increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year by the PlayStation brand in North America with total sales of $284 million. During the month, sales of PS3 were flat at 81,604 units. PSP witnessed a 39% increase in year-over-year sales thanks in part to the April price drop to $169, as well as our new marketing efforts with the 'Dude Get Your Own' campaign. PSP unit sales for May totaled 221,120. The PS2 also continued to be a strong performer during the month with unit sales of 187,765."
