Xbox 360 Premium / Elite

Guys,

Am toying with the idea of getting myself an xbox360 but find myself wondering whether it's worth waiting for the elite with the hdmi output and bigger HDD? Also I can't seem to find any release date / price info for the UK?

Have any of you bought a premium and then upgraded the HDD?

Cheers

Andy (Getting fedup of not being online and gaming) :D

Obvious question is how much of an issue is HD gaming for you? dont think the bigger HDD is too much of a problem to worry about but the normal premium will give you easily a good enough pic and online gaming for you. Jump in now if you cant wait, unfortunately i couldnt tell you when the Elite is due out. Sorry

Keep hearing conflicting reports re its release date, some say end of this month, some saying nearer christmas to coincide with downloadable movies from the marketplace, and price drop of the premium console for Xmas.

Some people have imported the HDD and it works fine by all accounts, although I've heard rumours that putting a US HDD (they're region coded aparently) onto a UK console turns it into an American PAL machine and Live will pick that up as being a modded console and so ban you from playing online.

By all accounts, unless you're gonna use the hd hdvd addon and upscale to 1080p then I dont think the HDMI isnt going to give many benefits over component.

I don't really see the point in waiting to be honest. Only thing I'm looking for is the 65Nm chips and greater reliability therefore I plan to sell mine before the end of my warranty and get a new console.

I just wish it was a lot quieter :(

Iain Young 12 June 2007 03:25 PM

Just turn the hifi up :D

STi wanna Subaru 12 June 2007 03:26 PM

It should be if it's running cooler because of the new chips. I never notice once playing but when it starts it certainly gets your attention! :D

Not always an option. I can always use headphnoes but playing on Live! gets abit tricky then ;)

The elite does NOT run on the 65Nm chip - the motherboard has redesigned heatsinks and thats the only other internal change apart from the HDMI. The DVD drive is unchaged also.

It's still as noisy as its always been.

STi wanna Subaru 12 June 2007 03:53 PM

Yeah I knew that. sorry if my post was misleading.

T4molie 12 June 2007 03:55 PM

Thanks for the replies :)

So the upshot is I should just go buy one and get on Live to get in on some Forza 2 Racing :D

Had a play on it on Sunday at my bro's place, loved it and then saw the thread of you lot racing online :thumb:

Does the 20Gb HDD cause any space issues with downloading playable demos?

STi wanna Subaru 12 June 2007 03:59 PM

You end up with about 13Gb free and for me it's been enough. A demo is about 1Gb as a rule. that's plenty for me. It would only be when the high def content on marketplace is available you may want more. but then you're not using it for games so depends on what you want to use the 360 for.

messiah 12 June 2007 04:15 PM

You'll probably find you'll delete a lot of stuff after a while, if you like a demo you'll buy the full game so you'll have no need for it anymore, or you'll hate it an delete it.

Its the expansions that take up the space - Shimering Isles for Oblivion was just under 1gb, GRAW's expansions tend to be 700mb+, there's an hd south park thats 1gb too, plus a lot of documentaries on Halo 3 that are quite chunky.

T4molie 12 June 2007 04:24 PM

So the upshot being that if I don't get rid of stuff that I've watched (eg Hallo 3 Docs then it'll fill pretty quickly but then I shouldn't be a lazy ar$e :)

Neanderthal 12 June 2007 04:28 PM

I've had my premium pack since launch and have never had a problem with lack of space. Usually keep it bubbling around 5-6Gb free space :thumb:

messiah 12 June 2007 04:34 PM

Same as Neanderthal, still got about 3-4gb left, I tend to play demo's then delete after a while - but mostly keep the game video's as they're quite good for showing off the HD side of things.

STi wanna Subaru 12 June 2007 04:39 PM

worth noting that anything you've paid to download can be deleted and downloaded again at a later date should you wish. not ideal but thought i'd let you know.

yep, good point.

Your purchase history is kept by MS, so if you lose your HDD you dont lose your points or any content when you get a replacement.
