I like it, but am not too sure about the font smoothing yet

Very similar to ie7, except on my machine it runs slower and seems to crash a lot (I know it's only a beta). Not that impressed so far to be honest...

some of the look+feel is nicer than ie7 ( dropdowns for instance ) , font smoothing makes it look a bit crayony......

I'll use it for the rest of the day and see how it pans out :)

no importing of book marks from FF or IE as far as i can see.

also, why am i irritated by the fact that i have to select the current address to overwrite it with another :(

with FF, I just click in the address bar and type a few letters like it knows i want to go to a new address.

Tried it, slow as heck and they dont following the simplest of windows standards which makes it a nightmare to use. Seemed about as bad as iTunes and Quicktime, in fact I dont know how they can make an OS considering they are so poor at making software.

Being a Safari user on the Mac I can not see any point of running it on Windows. Can anyne shed any light on the reasons why they did this? :confused:

i've stopped using it. back on FF 2 - much better, quicker, friendlier, readable.

well been using all day yesterday and it seems fine, but as rich said, why would you want to :)

Been away (Montreal GP) so didn't get to see the keynote, so I'm catching up now.

Might download Safari 3 for Mac and PC (downloading bootcamp 1.3 at the moment) and have a play.

It explains why they renamed the web button on the iPhone to Safari in recent ads and press screenshots, as it'd would make sense to Mac people, but maybe not to PC people, but with them now (ok, once it's final really) having Safari for PC it'll make more sense to them that it's a browser.

As to why do it for PC. Well, I think it's to do with the iPhone. Safari will render things differently to IE and Firefox, and so when people view a site on their iPhone, it'll look different to when they view it on thier PC. It should look the same on the Mac as they'd be using Safari. So, create Safari for PC and you maintain a uniform look across Mac, PC and iPhone.

There is also the widget development side of things for the iPhone. I think I read correctly that Apple is going to allow people to create their own widgets of the iPhone, but to protect the security of the iPhone they'll run via safari. Thus, for development purposes you'd need a mac, as I'd guess you would test these widgets out by running them through Safari. On a mac you might get away with using Dashboard or Dashcode, but those things don't exist (yet) on a PC, thus dev would be limited to the Mac platform.

If you bring in Safari for PC then you can allow people to test the widgets out in the same browser that wil be used on the iPhone and the Mac, again giving compatibility between the platforms.

Surely it should render them the in exactly the same way. Are you saying that Safari doesn't adhere to the html standards?

I'm a big fan of ClearType on my 1920x1200 laptop screen, but the font smoothing in Safari is useless

I don't think any browser really does!
Safari and FF definitely do not and IE, well 7 is better..... :(

Jobs reckons that Safari is twice as fast as IE7. The second page I went to caused the PC to crash, ironically it was the UK Apple site...

That said, MSN won't run on my Vista PC either so reckon it could be the PC (which incedentally has nothing much on it other than the standard vista stuff and some browers/office)

i dont use safari on MAC, so i wouldnt waste my hard-drive space on PC to use it LOL

I think, and others may correct me if I'm wrong here, but Safari is pretty strict when it comes to parsing pages, whereas other browsers may not be so strict, this can mean that some pages don't look the same depending on the browser being used.

It could be the reverse though, that Safari is not being strict enough.

I know that when the new look SN went live there were a few rendering issues, which only appeared in safari, it was fine in firefox, and it did take me a while to figure out and address the problem and report a fix back to webby.

For the above reason I can see why Apple would want a cross platform/device browser.

hmm, Safari ain't exactly brilliant on the Mac, let alone on PC. (and that's coming from a die-hard Mac user! :D)

After all, isn't it based on the old Netscape system (i.e, not used!!)

I'm using FF, and it is much better.

ps, might be a PC bug, but Safari DOES remember the locations in the URL bar, so you can type in the first few letters...... Well, it does on the Mac.. :)
