help.. front mount intercooler has trashed my scoob

I have a question for anyone out there who has fitted a FMIC.

I have a classic shape scoob and have just fitted a genuine Hybrid FMIC, the car was heavily modded before and ran fine but i wanted a FMIC so i can continue to the next stage. The problem is that the cars boost is now terrible .
Before the mod the car came on full boost at around 3500 and pulled right through to the red, now it does not come on boost untill around 4500 revs and does not feel no where near as fast. I expected some increase in lag but not this much and also the lack of power to what was before i did not expected. The car has not been remapped since the mod but i still expected minor improvements. I am wrong in thinking so? also if mapped will the boost come in sooner or is it another turbo i need. (only fitted a brand new vf30 2000 miles ago). any suggestions would be appreciated:cry:

i'd say

REMAP :D

I take it you have checked for leaks Etc ??

PMSFL adding a fmic with out a remap and thinking its gonna be better !!! you will still have more lag once its mapped but the power will be sooo much better ;)

It had been previousley remapped when other mods and the new turbo was fitted, but even prior to this when the parts were fitted they made a difference but this time it has had the adverse effect, if you say that the lag will still be there even with a map then maybe i need another new turbo unit. I want boost as soon as i touch the throttle. if the intercooler is going to prevent this then ill rip it off and start again with a TMIC, only problem is now the front bumper will have a gaping hole in it.

stevebt 10 June 2007 09:13 PM

fitting a FMICwill always add lag as compared to a TMIC !!! but the power difference when the turbo comes in will be bigger on a FMIC !! if you sill have 1000rpm more lag after a remap ?? id be looking at my setup or the mapping ??

Or get a turbonator.....:D ;)

or just buy Alan g's car ;)

isnt 3500rpm a bit late for full bost anyway on a vf30?

Definately check for leaks, I had problems fitting a monster fmic on my car with a whistling noise and hesitation. think I sorted it today as the new dump valve a turbosmart megasonic was stuck and would not open. think I have solved it now

I put a Harvey Hybrid on my tweeked Sti V3, remap by AndyF and the car was great after.

cocked it up by fitting a big sport cat...

More power = more lag. Fact of life mate. :thumb:
I'm sure a remap will sort out most of it though.

Would you care to elaborate? I thought the modern sports cats made no difference to performance.

I found that my H&S catted 3" DP did not have a alot to say on the top power, but quite a bit on the spoolup :-(

DannyBoy007 11 June 2007 10:55 AM

As said check all hose connections, I would say you have a boost leak, Also check the plumbing on the dump valve as this might be incorrect, it's not unknown for people to get the plumbing round the wrong way.

With regards to lag, After I fitted mine, It would start spooling around 1-200 RPM later but this was dialed out after a remap.

:nono: ;)

I didn't notice much difference when I had the APS SR40 with APS TMIC and then changed to Hyperflow FMIC - just a slight difference in throttle response - and that was before the remap at that time.

I'd def recommend remap by decent tuner and a 3 port solenoid (or EBC) plus check for boost leaks...as that will cause all sorts of problems

Guys I have checked for leaks , all pipework connections are solid, i do hear a whislting noise when on boost , the car still makes 1.2 bar but feels crap, I have an avcr controlling the boost so any leaks and this may compensate for it but i cannopt find any, I have checked the dumpvalve which is an Greddy type s recirc valve I have tried many adjustments with it but still have this massive lag effect , i know it seriousley requires another remap but this amount of lag which has been created seems to be a lot compared to what seems to be the norm , will fit the TMIC back on to see if anything has been upset in the FMIC install. Also i am considering another turbo unit if it is the combination of the FMIC and VF30, this car is a black hole for money, oh well live once die once...

I had the same thing with mine too, checked all pipes for leaks and run a dawes device to control boost. Dont get full boost till about 4500 on a TD05.
Given up getting to the bottom of it and having a 2.5 built up now, hopefully that will improve things. Engine and gearbox were getting a bit ropey anyway.

Top Tip on checking for Boost leaks.
Pressurise the whole of your Intercooler & pipe network using a Compressor Etc,
Block off one end, Throttle body side Etc & stuff a Rag & the airline down the other, this way you can check for leaks easily, I thought i had not got one until i did this, Found the blighter after a few mins of listening & feeling. :thumb:

I had the slight whistling sound on my Hybrid to, so I think that is quite normal.

Might be a stopid question, but did you adjust the AVC-R after the installation? I mean, if you have not adjusted it or tried some run with the self learn activated the AVC-R will not compensate for anything?

I am asking because i saw the same thing when I installed my Hybrid. I was running a TD05-16G. When I did the first run with the FMIC I got full boost at around 4500 RPM, but after a few runs with self learn activated on the AVC-R I was very close to full boost simular to when the TMIC was installed.

I had manually adjusted it to compensate but have not run it on self learn i will try this tomorrow and see what results i get. I am still extremely dissapointed with the initial outcomes from fitting a FMIC.

YOu've got a spool up issue, not lag, from the sounds of it.
A remap will sort most of it out. An FMIC may give you a little more lag, but nothing to write home about.

Yes, you have hit the nail on the head, its spool not lag. When I'm at 4500 rpm at a constant speed then hit the pedal the boost comes on as quickly as it did with the TMIC. However it does not come on full till 4500 now when going through the revs whereas before it came in at about 3000.

Why would a front mount cause spool later up the revs?
