5k toy -ideas please
Right ladies and gents. I am 30 at the end of the month and have decided to throw some money away on a toy.
Criteria as follows Not bothered about age Must seat at least 1 though it would be an advantage to be at least 2+2 Relatively quick though doesn't have to be daft Must not cost 5k to buy then 5k per month to run Will be used for summer commutes, drives out, probably a small amount of track time I want it to stand out a bit not as in lairy pink paint job but capable of commanding a second glance It will not be an only car Considered so far Nissan 200SX - bit too run of the mill Porsche 944 S2 (poss cab) or turbo - seems to come top of my list every time I think about it Scooby - Been there done that got the t-shirt, hat, jacket, bag, etc, etc, etc Caterfield - need to spend more than 5k really Help............ |
Might get a nice S2 for 5k.
A 5k turbo might cost you that again in 12 months. |
Any more info dave or places to look, I know you have got one - it's one of the reasons I started looking at them

I'll probably be the only one to say this, but my 944S was a pig in the wet (spun the rears up to about 60) and even in the dry the handling wasn't exactly confidence building. Dunno if they got better with the S2 but I really wouldn't go down that route again. The 944S, Lux and early 951s (944turbo) were all overhyped, yet beautiful cars. IMO.

Get a Mk2 Escort with a cossie engine, you will have to look around but you might get one for approx 5-6k. Its the kind of car you can buy and then sell a year later for what you paid, and have had a lot of fun in it. Or a 205 with a GTi-6 conversion?

Turbo/Supercharged MX5

Mazda RX7

Ropey E30 M3? Or a very good 325i MSport. Or an E36 M3?

Honda Integra type R. Fills all your needs and great on the track too. Cheqp to run considering performance. Gets a second look, especially the JDM car.

Bit dull in the looks department though
and a 400bhp mr2 is just that :luxhello: :luxhello: stu |
944 S2 would be nice IMO - fairly rare and I think still quite desirable, and I doubt you'd lose much on the car value (running costs could be high though?)
Elan S2 turbo - quick when chipped, open-top, Lotus handling, again car should hold its value very well. I expect you could easily insure either on classic car insurance for peanuts. |

Raw pocket rocket thrills - tuned pulsar GTi-R.
although you'd have to look long and hard for a decent example, and the image is (unfairly) boy-racer. |
Westfield - If you want something that will put a huge smile on your face and something you can keep on the road on the cheap.
You cant beat a low slung top off experience. Have had loads of very fast saloons and coupes - But nothing has ever compared in terms of driver fun and involvement as the VX220 turbo I had or MX5 turbo. When you are low to the ground and have the top off, you don't have to be driving fast to have fun, its just as much fun plodding about. Although I haven't done it yet - I figure a westfield even with say a modest 150bhp engine in the raw state they are, must be huge huge fun as a toy. You also have all the other cheaper kit car derivatives, such as the Robin Hood, Dax Rush etc, etc. |
As a hot rodder, I think this seems a lovely little fun runabout, quick, very cheap to run and looks very different to the usual stuff:
eBay.co.uk: 1971 Morris Minor Pickup - Hotrod - Modified - Restored (item 120129481312 end time 17-Jun-07 13:27:51 BST) PS: It's not mine and nothing to do with me. I already have a pick up in the garage for fun..! |
and just over budget and a bit too late, but:
eBay.co.uk: 1954 MORRIS MINOR PRO STREET NITROUS NO SWAP (item 300113106281 end time 29-May-07 23:41:30 BST) Looks like fun..... |
