Dumb question time...

Not posted one of these for a while...! The import WRX auto I bought recently (1995 model) is run on Shell's finest. But it suddenly occured to me (better late than never) that the salesman was adamant it would run on 95 - which means that's what was in it when I bought the car. Will it have "adjusted" itself to the lower octane and therefore I'm wasting my money with V-Power? Or does it adjust upwards? If the former, any advice?

Senior moment complete.

put v-power in it, its a much better fuel. Fill half a tank, then disconnect the battery for a few hours. Restart take it for a drive, it should have adjusted.

Doesn't it adjust automatically without disconnecting the battery?

98+ RON was NOT available in japland in 1995 anyways, so the car would'nt have been run on it over there!

The Auto is 220ps isn't it? Which is pretty much UK tune IIRC

It does but is a slightly slower process. I think disconnecting the battery is far easier and quicker.

I think I had the same issue after i bought mine. I was putting V-Power in mine but only noticed a difference after the ECU was reset

On an internet forum its difficult to tell what is good advice and what isnt. Hopefully youll regard this as the former:

[a] Subaru intended this car to run only on Premium Unleaded Gasoline.

[b] 100RON fuel wasn't available in Japan when the car was manufactured, their Premium Unleaded Gasoline had a RON of about 98.

[c] A 220PS 'Wagon (and the 220PS automatic Saloon) is better able to run on 95RON fuel than any other model, but that fuel is not of a high enough octane rating.

[d] Early ECUs aren't able to learn, like later, more advanced parts are: they are only able to retard the igntion (within a poorly limited range), when detonation is detected.
