first post , im new and need some advice
 

hi everyone, just thought i'd see if anyone could help me. my 03 wrx sti has 25k on the clock and the tyres are on the way out they have about 3 mm tread on the front but im losing grip in the wet on bends (prob should go slower). ive got a newborn so need to do the tyres on the cheap but still want quality . any ideas?

You want to chill out on the bends if you've got a newborn. :)

:) Welcome mate, i would'nt skimp on tires especially if your driving about with loved ones in the car. they are your only connection to the road fella.

Soobs with out DCCD understear on the limits of grip.
So slow in fast out of bends. Get the entry speed a touch slow then progressively feed the power in and you will be thrown out of the bend.
this is the quickest way to take a bend in a scoob.
When you reach the limits of grip it will be progressive understeer as the car is derived from FWD origionaly.
Provided you always put the best tyres on the back. This is where you want the most grip. Unless you induce trail braking or lifting.
As a rule slightly lower pressures in the back higher in front.
That way you will know it will understeer progressivly.
Tyre - Goodyear Eagle F1 are superb on the limits of grip. The tyres and the pressures are what keep you on the road. Its a dark art which has been discussed on here on and off over the years - you have to find something you are comfortable with. There have been issues with Goodyear recently -sidewalls spliting etc - search for the relevant thread.
Toyo - are also another firm favourite with people on here. So pehaps go for them. To get the most out of the car and as you have pointed out tyres and set up are everything. 4 wheel alignment and correct geometrey set up are also important

Here's an option for you:

Buy some 18" alloys, with say Toyo T1-S's, as i did £700. Sell you original alloys & tyres: £200,

So you've got new wheels and 4 boots for £500, £125 per corner.

I bet tyres will run you around £90-100 per corner alone. :cool:
