Having a blond moment, Ho do you fill up & check the coolant level in a Classic?

Hi guys,

Was just going over my Classic this morning, checking this level and that level, cleaning and so forth.

Whilst doing this I noted that my coolant level in the plastic bottle in the front left hand corner was low, so I filled this up with coolant until it was just below thr F mark. I then just out of interested checked in the head tank to the left of the rad.

When I opened that there was pratical no water in there.:wonder:

I've never checked this before as I've not had the car long and it was service just before I bought it.

I'm thinking that there should be water in there, but how do I know how much to put in there? there no level gauage of sight glass? or am I wrong, and there isn't going to be water in there from cold? Never owned a Subaru before and don't know if their different.

Fill that tank up (water & Coolant mix) top up the tank in the wing.
Go for a drive and then check again.

Do I fill the tank up to the top? right to the lid?

yep, fill the reservoir to the top. the plastic one is the expansion tank. might be a plan to go for a test run with the heater off and keep an eye on what your engine temps are doing. If you are losing coolant then before going down the failed-gasket route, check all your hoses and the rad end-tanks, which have a reputation for blowing leaks.
Cheers

you might be suffering from the cracked rad endtank syndrome that is very common.

I think this sounds about right, there was a not made on the MOT that there was a tiny leak from the bottom of the rad but where it was located was unidentifiable at the time. I'm guess its now got worse.

Oh well, new rad it is then. Cheers guys.
